Remi's Story
Remi is a year and a half old cairn terrier mix that loves everyone and enjoys life. He was found in a ditch, likely thrown out of a vehicle, and came into our program to find a new home. Let me tell you all about him.
Remi is friendly and outgoing – he loves adults and kids, and all the dogs and cats he has ever met. His ideal home would have another small, playful dog, and a secure fenced yard to run and play in. Because the dog in his foster home is a senior, and not interested in play, Remi plays with the resident cats…..but his style of play is a little rough for a cat, and they try to avoid him. He barks at every dog he sees, inviting them to play with him; we think he would bark less if he had a canine buddy in his home. Perhaps a privacy fence would help hide all the dogs passing by on the sidewalk, and help lessen the barking.
Remi is good on leash – he pulls starting out, then settles down….until he sees another dog, then pulls to go over and meet and play with them. He knows his name, but sometimes chooses not to come when called. This independence and the barking are traits of a cairn terrier………….. cairns are also known to be energetic and confident. He will sit on command, especially if a treat is involved. He has a few favorite toys that he carries around, and if he finds a paper towel or Kleenex on the floor he will playfully tear it apart. Remi will need approved chew or raw bones to help keep him occupied, and plenty of exercise to tire him out ! Riding in the car with his person is a big hit, just tether his leash so he won’t jump out when you open the door. Doesn’t jump around or climb on the driver – he just sits and looks out the window. At night, he sleeps on the bed with his person – he only weighs 15# and doesn’t take up much room.
Remi wasn’t neutered, and wasn’t housebroken when he came into the program. He was neutered in July, and he is almost housebroken (although sometimes it looks more like trying to mark something). He really needs someone that is home much of the time to let him out frequently. Initially he was crated when left (he objected to that for at least 15 minutes) – perhaps he could be just confined with his dog pal until he earns full house privileges. I don’t think his first family worked with him, so he would benefit from obedience training. Remi is easy going, affectionate (gives kisses), likes to cuddle, and thrives on attention. Likes to play “chase” and wrestle with other dogs.

His wiry coat gets brushed/combed a couple times a week, and occasionally the foster will trim the fur around his eyes and have his nails cut, but he otherwise doesn’t require professional grooming. Current on vaccinations, tested heartworm negative. His microchip is registered to Second Chance. Remi’s adoption fee is $300. Be sure you can take care of Remi for another 15 yrs. If you have another small playful dog, a secure fenced yard, are home much of the time, have previous dog experience and are interested in this handsome little dog, call 651-771-5662.
