Red - Loving Companion's Story
Red is fostered in Ontario, CAN. We can transport him to you!

Red has a tragic story. His Kentucky owner severely neglected all of his dogs and the dogs were seized by animal control. Red had been living in a small pen with one other dog, who had starved to death and was just laying there in the dirt. Several other dogs were also found dead on the property.

Red had a body score of 1, severely starved, but he didn't try to eat his friend. One day, the nightmare ended and he was taken to the county shelter. He lived in a shelter for a year while the court case transpired. The owners lost their attempt to get their dogs back. Red was finally allowed to leave the shelter in November 2025 and with the good care he received, he was at a normal weight when he left the shelter.

Like many dogs who have survived severe starvation, Red is very focused on food. Food must be stored, counters clean, cupboards shut, and trash hidden. He is smart and observant. However, he shows no food aggression with other dogs at feeding time.

Red will be happiest in a home where his people are present for most of the day. He thrives on human companionship and being part of everyday life. Red would benefit from a fenced yard and another dog to play with, but he could also be an only dog, as long as his humans are nearby. Red has prey drive and will focus on wildlife signs and scents. Neighbors who like to hear a pin drop will not appreciate his hound song. Red suffers a bit from separation anxiety but he is slowly improving.

Here is what we know about Red:

--5 years old (est.), 29 kg / 63 lb
--Very sweet and affectionate
--Craves human companionship
--Good with older kids and teens
--Good with strangers and visitors
--Housetrained when not left alone
--Dog friendly, respectful of other dogs
--Crate trained and sleeps in his crate most nights
--Leash trained with some jumping and pulling at times
--Loves stuffed animals, loves food puzzles
--Definitely no cats or other small mammals
--Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped

If you are interested in adopting Red, please fill out this form:
https://www.coonhoundrescue.ca/adoption-application/
