Red's Story
Hello, I’m Red! I’m around 1-2 years old and am a rat terrier mix.

I’m going to need a quiet house with no small children, another small dog to teach me that I’m safe and humans that have a lot of patience and are able to spend a lot of time with me. My foster family spends several hours a day talking to me, petting me, taking me on a couple walks a day and tries to take me on an adventure 4-5 times a week. I struggle to trust humans and the world around me is scary. I need a family that will work with me constantly to overcome my fears and understand that fine line of allowing me to have some space, but still push me to interact. Everyday I am learning and growing. For example, I’ve learned that I love going for walks, but I still try to run when someone goes to put a leash on me. I enjoy sitting on the couch, but get nervous if you try to get too close to me. I love treats, but most days am still too scared to take them from your hand. In the weeks that I’ve been with my fosters, all of us have worked hard to get me where I am. I spent the first few days hiding in a crate that was set up in a small bathroom with my bed and puppy pad. Slowly, I learned that it was safe in that little room and started spending more time outside of my crate. From there, I spent a few days cautiously pacing in and out of my room slowly going a few inches further as I felt more comfortable. Now I no longer use my room at all and only use a kennel when I’m staying home without someone. With the help of the other dogs and lots of work I now prefer to sit on the couch and have that as my “safe space”. I’m still working hard to trust people and I may be that way my whole life. I’m most relaxed during car rides where I sit in the backseat and may eventually sit in the passenger’s lap. My favorite treat is a puppuchino from Starbucks, although I just love treats in general. I’m still extremely skittish and if there is an opportunity to wiggle out of my collar or bolt out the door, chances are, I’ll take it. Since I’m still learning to trust people, I do not know basic commands yet and it may be a while before I get to that point. I love to hear the words “you’re alright”, “it’s okay” and “good boy”. With a lot of work, a lot of love and double that in patience, I can be a great dog for someone.
