Rayma's Story

Meet Rayma! Rayma came to ACCT as a stray back in December 2025, is estimated to be about 6 years old, and is now benefitting from a long term foster home until she finds her forever home! We couldn't think of a better way to describe her progress than the update her foster family gave us recently :

Per foster -- "I am writing to share an update on our wonderful foster dog, Rayma, whom we've had the privilege of caring for these past three months. We've grown incredibly fond of her, and the name Rayma has become quite special to us; we hope it can be her official name moving forward.

When Rayma first arrived, she was a shadow of the vibrant dog she is today. At six years old, she was severely under-socialized and clearly carried the weight of a difficult past. She was completely unfamiliar with the concept of house-training or crating, and the outside world was a terrifying place filled with overwhelming sights and sounds. Every rustle of leaves, every distant car, sent her into a state of panic. She was even initially reactive towards my resident dog, unsure of how to interact.

However, watching Rayma's transformation has been nothing short of miraculous and profoundly rewarding. With patience, consistent care, and a safe environment, she has blossomed. She is now fully potty-trained and crate-trained, finding comfort and security in her personal den. The world outside, once a source of terror, has become a place of joy. She now confidently ventures into the yard on her own, reveling in sunbathing and exploring. Her true, goofy personality shines through, complete with delightful bursts of morning and evening "zoomies" that are an absolute joy to witness.

One of the most heart-warming developments has been her bond with my resident dog. What began with fear has evolved into a beautiful friendship. After a careful, slow introduction, they are now inseparable best friends. My dog has been instrumental in teaching Rayma how to simply *be* a dog, providing much-needed confidence and companionship. Rayma has also shown no reactivity towards other dogs when encountered from a distance, suggesting she could thrive in a home with another tolerant and perhaps more submissive canine companion, given her enthusiastic, rough-and-tumble play style.

Her interactions with our resident cat have also been harmonious. While our cat is an indoor/outdoor explorer, Rayma shows playful curiosity, often initiating gentle chases. Our cat, being quite tolerant, simply finds higher ground when needed. With slow and controlled introductions, we believe she could acclimate well to other animals.

Rayma has been wonderful with our three teenagers, enjoying their company and affection. However, due to her exuberant play, she might be too boisterous for very young children. She loves people wholeheartedly, often resting her entire body against you for comfort and showering you with kisses.

Routine and structure are very important for Rayma. She is completely crate-trained, happily taking naps in her crate after meals, long car rides, or play sessions. She settles well when left alone, especially with a lick mat and calming music. At night, she sleeps soundly in her crate. It's important to note that due to what appears to be past trauma, Rayma is a light sleeper and can be quite sensitive if disturbed while resting. This is why her crate provides her with a crucial sense of security and personal space overnight.

While leash walking in unfamiliar places is still a work in progress, her confidence is growing daily. She has recently discovered the joy of car rides, enjoying the sights and sounds before settling down for a nap. Her playful spirit is undeniable; she absolutely adores balls and will happily engage in 15-minute fetch sessions before collapsing for a well-deserved snooze. She is highly food and treat motivated, making her a delight to train. When she lacks proper mental stimulation, she can resort to playful nipping for attention, which is easily managed with engagement.

Rayma is a low-to-medium energy dog once she feels settled in her environment. She needs a forever home that can offer her continued consistency, clear structure, and a deep well of patience. She will flourish with an adopter dedicated to nurturing her confidence and ensuring she feels safe and cherished every single day. This sweet girl has come so far and will undoubtedly bring immense joy and happiness to the right family."

If you or someone you know is interested in adopting Rayma, fill out an application or contact foster@acctphilly.org to inquire.

--

ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
