Rascal 's Story

Meet Rascal! (formerly known as Filipe)

Rascal’s journey began on the streets of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, where he was found as a stray, so painfully matted that his fur had to be shaved all the way down to his skin. Once the tangles were gone, what emerged wasn’t just a handsome little pup, but a bright, affectionate soul who had clearly been waiting for someone to see him and give him a second chance.

At just 20 months old and 16 pounds, Rascal is the perfect pint sized companion. He is happy, playful, and full of personality, with a spark that makes everyone smile. He gets along well with other dogs and does well with cats too, making him a great fit for many types of homes.

Rascal is doing very well with potty training and is about 75% there. His fur is more like hair and unbelievably soft, adding to his overall charm.

This little guy is deeply devoted to his people. Rascal is the definition of a Velcro dog, following you from room to room and wanting to be wherever you are. He loves being held and will happily put his little arms around your shoulders as if he’s giving you a hug, complete with lots of puppy kisses.

Rascal does have a bit of a mischievous, spicy side and definitely likes to have things his own way. If he feels pressured or forced to do something he isn’t comfortable with, he may try to communicate that with a nip. The key with Rascal is respect, patience, and listening to his cues. When given space, calm reassurance, and the chance to walk away and feel safe, he settles beautifully and shows just how loving he truly is. Because of this personality, Rascal would do best in a home with children age 12 and older who can understand and respect his boundaries.

Despite a rough start, Rascal greets life with enthusiasm, affection, and a big heart. He is ready to leave his past behind and give his whole self to a family who understands him, laughs at his sassy moments, and loves him for exactly who he is.

If you’re looking for a loyal little shadow, a cuddly companion, and a charming rascal who will keep life interesting, Rascal might just be your perfect match.

Age: Approximately 20 months old
Weight: 16 pounds
Breed: Mixed breed (likely Chihuahua / Pekingese mix)
Location: Weare, New Hampshire (available throughout New England)
Health: Neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated
Training: Crate trained, 80% house trained, and walks well on a leash

Personality:
• Smart, happy, and eager to please
• Playful with his toys and affectionate with people he trusts

Background:
• Rescued from the streets on Puerto Rico - likely dumped by his previous owner
• Despite hardship, remains resilient, affectionate, and full of heart

Ideal Home:
• Adult only home, or a home with children over 12 years old
• Another dog to play with and learn from
• Quiet, rural setting, as he is afraid of cars
• Someone patient and experienced who can continue his potty training

Current Care:
• Currently in our shelter in Weare, New Hampshire

Adoption Info:
• Apply at https://www.heartsandtails.org/adoption-application
• Due to high inquiry volume, only applicants who appear to be a good match will be contacted
