Quark's Story

Quark is a 10-12 lbs estimated 2 year old Westie mix who joined us from Yakima with his brother, Atom. We don't know much about Atom and Quark's history other than the fact that they came from a hoarding situation and showed obvious signs of neglect (both had very matted fur and sores on their skin.) During Atom's recent vet visit for vaccinations, our vet actually estimated Atom's age to be closer to 4-5 years, although we have no way of knowing for sure what his real age is. Quark's vet did not make any comment about his age and said he has excellent teeth.

Quark has been with the same foster since arriving to Seattle and is doing SO well under their care! At home, he is a very quiet dog. He LOVES to cuddle and is a great work-from-home buddy, being surprisingly low-energy and a big proponent of sleeping in. He is very comfortable being handled by his trusted humans and loves to join them in a sling/bag to malls, restaurants, etc. His humans can play with his teeth, trim his nails, and groom him and he just soaks up all the attention happily. He had a few accidents when he first transitioned to his foster home but is now fully potty trained.

Quark walks well on the leash but is still skittish and startled by people and noises. He is also dog-reactive and will growl, and sometimes bark, at almost every dog he sees, mostly to create space -- he has never lunged at anyone and prefers to dart away. If a dog reacts to him first, he will not react back and will instead go the other direction and/or hide. One thing he does like to chase is rabbits and squirrels -- he is a terrier after all!

Quark is wary/neutral around new people -- he tolerates being touched and picked up by strangers but is most comfortable around his humans. He bonds quickly and strongly to his primary caretakers and was pretty much attached to his current fosters after the first 1-2 days. He struggles with separation anxiety and some containment/crate anxiety -- he is not destructive but will be audibly distressed and refuse to settle if left alone in his kennel. He has no problems being left alone with other people and will likely just sit by the window and wait for his preferred humans to return. And once they return, he gets the biggest zoomies!

Quark is looking for a patient person who can advocate for his space and build his confidence in this big and scary world. He would do best with a consistent routine and a quiet household. We do not know how he does living with another dog -- he used to live with other dogs and has done well with puppies at the sanctuary, so it's possible he could thrive with a confident, gentle, non-confrontational dog in the home. He is quite reactive to cats, so we are not recommending him to a home with cats at this time. Because he is quite skittish and very wary of young children, we think a home with older and/or dog-savvy children is best.

If you are interested in meeting Quark, please fill out an application at https://forms.gle/ZvvQobuhgmkU5AJEA!

WE DO NOT RESPOND TO PETFINDER INQUIRIES. YOU MUST FILL OUT AN APPLICATION! Thank you!
