Possum's Story

When we first got Possum I knew he would need time—but I didn’t realize just how special watching his journey would be. He’s not the kind of dog who gives his heart away right away. When he first came into our home, he struggled to find his place with our family, and there were moments when I wondered how long it would take for him to feel like he belonged. I simply kept showing up for him, gave him the space he needed, and trusted the process.

Little by little, he started to let his guard down. Now, he’s integrated himself into our pack, and it’s been one of the most rewarding transformations I’ve ever watched. As his confidence has grown, so has his personality. Every week, a little more of the “real him” comes out. The shy, unsure, scared dog I first met has been replaced by this goofy, lovable boy who makes me smile every single day. He’ll make you laugh with his silly antics, melt your heart when he leans in for affection, and remind you that the best things in life are worth waiting for.

He is what I call a slow burner. He won’t be the dog who instantly climbs into your lap on day one, but once he trusts you, his love is endless. It’s the kind of love that grows a little stronger every day, and before you know it, you can’t imagine life without him.

He’s incredibly intelligent and loves having his mind engaged. Like any Australian Shepherd, he’ll thrive with someone willing to invest time in him—not because he’s difficult, but because he’s so incredibly worth it. He wants to learn, he wants to connect, and he wants to be in a loving and caring family.

Fostering him has been bittersweet because I’ve had the privilege of watching him become the dog he was always meant to be. I know his perfect family is out there—someone who will be patient through those first few weeks/months and then get to experience what I’ve been lucky enough to see: a goofy, deeply loving, loyal best friend whose heart just keeps getting bigger the more he feels safe.

He’s taught me that sometimes the dogs who take the longest to open up end up loving you the hardest. I truly believe whoever adopts him is going to have one very special dog.
