Poppy's Story

Hi! I am Poppy! I am at least 8 years old, and I am a Beagle. I may be a senior but I am still full of life. I love people, love attention and love to be pet. I am a beautiful gal and have a lot of love to give. I do have one goal that my new family needs to help me with and that is to lose 20 pounds. Carrying all of that weight when I am so low to the ground causes my pain, discomfort and reduced mobility. Once I lose that weight, I will be doing better and will feel like a brand new gal. This goal involves more exercise - daily walks in the morning and evening, and reduce my caloric intake through diet. This is important as excess weight can reduce my life expectancy and put me at risk for many health conditions and issues.

My personality can be described as sweet, loving, loyal and a great companion. I love to stay near my family and don't mind laying near you for some 1:1 quality time.

I do love to go out on walks, play at the park and enjoy the great outdoors. Despite being an older adult, I still have a moderate amount of energy. I am pretty 'low key' and have a mild manner and disposition. I am 'just right' in the temperament and energy department.

It is difficult to assess if I am spayed. I have a lot of body fat in my abdomen that makes it difficult to assess and I am not at an ideal weight to undergo the spay operation safely. Weight loss will help me tremendously in multiple ways! I am up to date on my vaccines - bordetella, distemper and rabies. I have been Heartworm, Erhlichlia, Lyme's and Anaplasma tested and I am negative for all. I receive routine flea and tick preventatives, monthly as well as some well deserved pampering periodically: brushing, nail trims & ear cleaning. I am very vocal about trimming my nails. This is where my diva comes out.

My ideal home includes an active home where I can go out, run and play with my family. I have not been around small kids at the shelter - I don't know how I would do. My shelter family says I likely would do ok with children but they need to understand and respect my boundaries. It is important that they respect me because I only want to love and care for my family and not get hurt. I have not been around cats so I do not know how I would do with them.

I need a family that is caring, compassionate and loving. I want a family that is patient, willing to give me what I need: a warm bed, a controlled amount of good food & clean water, and good ol' pets and love. Once I warm up, I enjoy being pet and loved on. It may take me some time to warm up - so it is important my new family is patient with me and allowing me to warm up in my own time.

My shelter family works tirelessly to ensure I and my friends go to the right family. If you feel that person is you, I'd love to meet you. Please submit an application if you'd like to be considered becoming my family!

It is important that we ensure that is a great fit for not just you but also for the animal. 1. Meet & Greet. Come and meet our animals. We have so many wonderful and loving animals. We encourage you to find someone who complements your lifestyle and you/your family. 2. Fill out an application. Check out our website for our digital application: https://www.redwoodareaanimalshelter.org/ OR you can fill out an application in person during our open hours of operation (Monday - Friday, 1p - 5p). 3. Approval: we will look over your application and may ask questions if need be to ensure a great fit! We follow a 'same day' adoption process - no need for any additional checks, visits or etc. Please keep in mind: it is always our top priority to place animals in great homes. We reserve the right to decline an applicant if we feel this is not a great fit. 4. Pay Adoption Fee: adoption fees are based on the age, breed and medical care received by the animal. Adoption fees may change without notice however the applicant will be notified if there is a change in the fee. We accept the following payment methods: cash, check and all major debit/credit cards. Credit/Debit card transactions are subject to a 4% credit card processing fee. Please note: ALL ADOPTION FEES are final. There are no refunds. 5. Go Home: if you plan to do a 'same day' adoption, adopters are required to bring a collar & leash (for dog adoptions) and/or cat carrier for (cat adoptions). 6. Live happily ever after: this is the end goal, of course! All adoptions are final - meaning please be certain that you have properly prepared your home, your family and your lifestyle to add in another pet. Rescue animals often need time to decompress and adjust to a new surrounding - please be patient and have grace.
