Poppy's Story

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

Poppy is a wonderful dog, but not every home is the right fit. Understanding her medical needs is essential to her success and happiness.

Poppy is an approx. 8-year-old Golden Retriever searching for the family she deserves after being a breeding mom in a puppy mill. Despite everything, she remains resilient, loyal, and deeply loving.

Poppy has a significant heart condition requiring medication twice daily and monitoring. Earlier this year, after her spay, she developed aspiration pneumonia. Against the odds, she survived, but it caused strain and damage to her heart.

Poppy is not currently in congestive heart failure, but her cardiologist advised she is trending in that direction. We cannot predict her future, but want to be transparent about her prognosis.

What we know for certain is that Poppy is resilient. She enjoys life, seeks affection, plays fetch, spends time with dog friends, and embraces each day with the gentle spirit that made everyone love her.

Because of her heart condition, Poppy's future may look different than a healthy younger dog. Whether she has years ahead or less time than we hope, our wish is for her to spend that time in a home of her own. Poppy deserves more than being a rescue dog. She deserves to be someone's dog.

Like many puppy mill survivors, Poppy arrived unsure of the world. With patience, routine, and love, she has made progress. Once you earn her trust, she bonds deeply and considers herself a stage-five clinger. She loves affection, fetch, food, and her Nylabone.

Poppy can be cautious about leashes, sudden movements, doorways in new places, and unfamiliar men with beards, but continues to improve with patient handling. She has modest exercise needs, loves a fenced yard, and is making progress on short walks with dog friends.

Poppy's home must include: secure fenced yard, confident dog companion, and patient family that understands trust takes time.

Adoption Fee: $250. Ohio residents only. Apply stopthesuffering.org.
