I almost never foster puppies. Give me the seniors, the crusty little old dogs, the ones who need a soft landing. Puppies are adorable, but they are usually tiny tornadoes with teeth.<br/><br/>Then Pollo showed up.<br/><br/>Unfortunately for me (and fortunately for him), he's long, low to the ground, about 30 pounds, and exactly my favorite kind of dog.<br/><br/>He's about a year old and came from a cruelty and neglect case in St. Bernard Parish. Whatever happened before rescue clearly didn't break his spirit, because this boy wakes up every day convinced life is one big adventure.<br/><br/>The first week? I'm not going to lie... we had some negotiations. He's a puppy, after all. But once he settled into a routine, he became such an easy houseguest. When I'm gone, he happily hangs out in his kennel with a good chew. At night? He sleeps in bed pressed against my back like he's convinced he's actually an eight-pound dachshund. He even has access to the doggy door if nature calls, but most nights he'd rather just cuddle.<br/><br/>Pollo absolutely adores other dogs. If you have a playful dog looking for a best friend, he's your guy. One of his favorite playmates is my tiny 11-year-old senior dog. He's incredibly gentle with her, often rolling over so she can "win" their wrestling matches. He also somehow convinced my paralyzed dog in a wheelchair that tug-of-war is a perfectly reasonable activity. It's a very uneven competition, but they both have the time of their lives.<br/><br/>Every morning looks like a comedy show around here: my Golden Retriever takes off running, Pollo barrels after him, and bringing up the rear is my tiny three-legged Chihuahua, determined to keep everyone in line.<br/><br/>I keep Pollo close to me throughout the day because I'm a big believer in teaching dogs in the moment. He's learned quickly that furniture isn't for chewing. If he starts making poor life choices, a simple redirection to a toy or a Himalayan chew is usually all it takes. He's eager to learn and genuinely wants to make good decisions.<br/><br/>He's also wonderfully confident. Rain? Let's play. Thunderstorms? No big deal. Fireworks? Doesn't bother him. He's far more interested in seeing what everyone else is doing.<br/><br/>We've taken him to adoption events, and he's been fantastic. He truly doesn't know a stranger. Every person is simply a new friend he hasn't met yet. Fair warning, though—he greets people with enthusiastic hugs. Around my house, that's perfectly acceptable because I believe dogs should be allowed to tell us how much they love us. If you'd rather keep all four paws on the floor, he'll learn that, too. He's smart and eager to please.<br/><br/>The best way I can describe Pollo is that he's a goofy, happy, affectionate young dog trapped in the body of a medium-sized dog who is absolutely convinced he's lap-sized.
