Poe's Story

Poe is a beautiful mixed breed dog...maybe flat coated retriever and Newfoundland mix. His face looks Newfoundland. He is just 2 + years old. He loves to play and is very bouncy when playing, however, Poe must have had some problems with a previous owner, because he is relatively scared of humans, until a period of warm up. He wants to trust and he wants to play and he sincerely wants to understand you. He cocks his head from side to side as you speak. He knows and loves all of the staff at the shelter, but that makes him protective of us as well. So we know he will be a good watchdog. We also know that he resource guards...his crate especially. He does not like strangers approaching his crate.

When worked with, Poe warms up quickly. He LOVES to be brushed, and he has a thick, long coat that will need brushing a couple of times a week. He is crate trained and we believe he is house trained, although we are not quite sure on that. He has never messed in the shelter facility, nor has he messed in his crate.

Poe does not walk on collared leash, although he does better with a harness, you can tell he has never be required to do so.

Poe does have trust issues, so he needs to be with people who will give him time. Women are a better fit for this dog, as he seems more scared of men, but he does eventually warm up to men as well.

Poe is neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped.

Animal Preservation of East Texas (APET)'s Adoption Policy
We have potential adopters apply for the animal they are wishing to adopt. We try to have an indepth conversation about what kind of pet they are seeking, which ones would be the best fit for them, and do they have the necessary home environment for the animal they wish to adopt. If we feel they meet the criteria for the home, we then ask to be allowed to contact their vet to make sure any other animals on the home are spayed/nuetered and up to date on vaccines. If we have any doubts at all, we schedule a home visit. We go out to the adopter's home and check their fence, their home, and any other animals they own. All of their own animals must be spayed and neutered and up to date on vaccines or they are not allowed to adopt any of ours. If everything passes inspection, they adoption is allowed to proceed and they return to the shelter to pick up the animal. Most times however, just having a conversation is sufficient. We make a copy of their ID, we have them fill out the application, we go over the most important parts of the application that we feel they need to pay attention to, and we allow the adoption to proceed.
