Phoebe's Story
Update:
You may have noticed that Phoebe has not been posted on Petfinder, despite still being here at the shelter. After a lot of consideration, our focus has shifted from traditional adoption to finding her a rescue placement with someone experienced in her breed and behavior needs.

Phoebe is a herding breed through and through, and she has developed protective behaviors in the shelter environment. She will nip and attempt to herd unfamiliar people entering what she now sees as her home. This is not aggression or malice — it is instinct, fear, and overstimulation combined in a stressful environment.

Because of this, Phoebe will require an experienced Border Collie handler or rescue willing to work with her patiently and properly. Slow introductions are absolutely essential to help her feel safe and avoid any risk of nipping. Once she trusts someone, Phoebe is incredibly loyal and devoted.

We know her perfect match is out there — someone who understands that dogs like Phoebe are not “bad dogs,” but dogs who need the right environment, structure, and guidance to succeed.

Please share to help us find the experienced rescue or home this smart, sensitive girl desperately needs.

___________________________________________________________________________________
Meet Miss Phoebe!

You may recognize this beautiful face from a post we shared last November — Phoebe was the terrified mama dog found tied up outside our shelter after hours. ? Despite every effort to follow leads and ask around, we were sadly unable to learn who abandoned her or what happened to her puppies. The only small comfort was discovering that her milk had mostly dried up, meaning her little ones were likely old enough to start weaning.

While our hearts ache not knowing what became of them, our focus now is on giving Phoebe the happy, secure life she’s always deserved. ??

Phoebe is a Collie mix, and true to her breed, she’s incredibly smart and observant. She’ll need a family who can keep her mind active — puzzle toys, training games, or even agility work would make her very happy!

After what she’s been through, Phoebe can be nervous with new people, especially men. She’s never broken skin, but in a situation where she feels trapped or threatened, we believe she will react defensively. Because of this, she’ll do best in a child-free home with an experienced, patient family — ideally someone familiar with herding breeds or fearful dogs.

Once she learns to trust you, Phoebe’s gentle heart shines through. She’s affectionate, loyal, and incredibly sweet with those she feels safe around.

We know the right home is out there — one that will give her the time, understanding, and love she’s been waiting for. Could that home be yours?

Let’s give this special girl the second chance she deserves. ?
