Petunyah's Story
Name: Petunyah
Estimated Birthday: July 8, 2025
Adoption Fee: $465

Petunyah may sound like the name of a delicate little flower, but this girl is actually a 39-pound, short-and-stout bully breed with a whole lot of personality and an even bigger heart.

Petunyah is approximately 2 years old and came to us as a stray. Her first week in rescue was incredibly difficult, as she required emergency surgery, including an emergency hysterectomy. We don’t know what her life looked like before coming into rescue, but we do know that some things still frighten her and that she needs a family willing to give her the time, patience and consistency she deserves.

Petunyah is not a dog who will immediately run up to a stranger and ask for affection. She can be fearful when someone new reaches toward her, and she is especially uncomfortable with anyone touching or moving around her neck. Sudden movements can startle her. Her foster has worked with her patiently and, with time, treats and consistency, Petunyah has made wonderful progress. She can now have her leash put on and her collar removed, but she still needs someone who will continue that work and help her learn that she is safe and that no one is going to hurt her.

Once Petunyah trusts you, you get to see the wonderful dog underneath that initial fear. She is affectionate, playful, smart and very trainable. She loves getting the zoomies, grabbing a toy to chew on and then settling down beside you on the couch. She is obsessed with balls. She will happily chase them, retrieve them and then proudly keep them for herself. In Petunyah’s world, apparently “fetch” means “thank you for this ball, I will be keeping it forever.”

Petunyah is 100% crate trained and settles nicely once she is inside. She may need a little encouragement in the form of a treat to go into her crate, but she does not try to escape and has no accidents in her crate. She is also approximately 85% house trained and continues to improve. She walks on leash with some pulling, but nothing excessive.

Petunyah has met dogs through a gate and has shown friendly tail wags, although she has not yet had a face-to-face introduction. She has not been tested with cats. Because of her history and her need for structure, we recommend continuing to feed her separately from other animals.

Petunyah is not a first-time dog. She needs an experienced owner who understands canine behavior and is willing to continue working with her, provide consistent training and allow her to set the pace as she builds trust. Her new family needs to understand that earning Petunyah’s trust may take time, but the relationship you build with her will be worth every bit of that effort.

Because of her potential fearfulness, Petunyah would do best in a home without young children. We are looking for children 15 and older who can understand and respect her boundaries.

The goal for Petunyah is not a quick fit. It is the right fit. She has already overcome so much, and now she deserves a patient, experienced person who will give her the safety, consistency and love she needs to truly blossom.

Before emailing- please read:
- Yes, this dog is available for adoption
- Apply at c2cnd.org
- The adoption fee covers their age-appropriate shots, microchip, deworming, spay/neuter, and any other medical expenses while in our care.
- Local adopters only.
