Her story will break your heart, but she deserves to have it heard. <br/><br/>5 years ago, this beautiful girl was brought to the shelter. She was a 3 week old puppy, her eyes and ears barely opened. The first sights and sounds she was exposed to was the screams of other dogs in a dark, crowded shelter. Despite all this, her assessment said "Friendly. Clean coat - no fleas". <br/><br/>She was adopted out by the shelter, and though they had assumed it was a happy ending for her, it was only the beginning.<br/><br/>5 years later, she was collected by animal control as a stray... she was no longer the affectionate puppy they remembered. Her coat was filthy and cowering in fear. It was clear she had been abused: she'd flinch, cower, and run away. She wouldn't accept human touch, and would thrash on the leash as if she had never even been on a walk. When the shelter tried contacting the adopters: Nothing. They did not want her back. She was abandoned and found herself at the same shelter: This time, with a euthanasia deadline. <br/><br/>The shelter was going to put her down. She was too fearful to be adopted: No one was interested in even meeting her in the play yard. She was no longer an easily adoptable 3 lb puppy... she was a dirty, scared 45 lb dog. <br/><br/>When we saw her on the euthanasia list, we wanted to help, but didn't have space. By a stroke of luck, in her final hours, one of our other dogs was adopted out, freeing up a spot for her. Adoption truly saves lives... we reached out in her last moments, and saved her life.<br/><br/>We've worked hard to rebuild her confidence. She might submissively roll on her back or cower around new people, but she's learned to trust and learned how a leash works - now she loves going on walks! She's had slow introductions to other dogs at the boarding kennel and has made plenty of friends. She is also crate trained and housebroken; she is a fairly quiet dog as well.<br/><br/>She bonds so strongly to her caretakers, and is very cuddly. She is moderately active, and a perfect age where she has no trouble keeping up with you but is not too demanding of exercise. When it's hot out, she doesn't even want to leave the AC. <br/><br/>If you want to be part of Petal's redemption arc, she is looking for a forever home.
