Meet Peppermint Patty
Peppermint Patty is a 14 month old female Affenpinscher-Yorkie Terrier mix who weighs 11.2 lbs. She came from the shelter where her and four others from the same home were turned in. The shelter is not able to do adoptions due to staffing shortage and so they rely completely on rescues to help save their dogs. This love bug is as sweet as her namesake. Despite her initial shyness, this pup is incredibly cuddly, affectionate, energetic, and gentle. This makes her a wonderful dog for a person who wants a pup to spoil, and show just how wonderful the world can be.
When Peppermint Patty initially meets anyone she tends to be very shy and timid, and it is not uncommon for her to take her own sweet time to warm up to people. With her foster, she actually spent the first 18 hours mostly in her crate. But don't worry! Peppermint Patty does warm up to people if given plenty of time and space, and after 2 days with her foster (and plenty of treats) she was pretty comfortable with her foster touching and handling her. She does tend to remain on the reserved side after getting a bit more comfortable UNLESS there is another dog. Peppermint Patty has a unique attitude towards other dogs, and becomes much more open, cuddly, and comfortable with people if she is around another confident dog. That being said, after spending a week with her foster there were no dogs needed! She is much less shy and often cuddles with her foster for hours and loves to go on super long walks! When outside, she is definitely active and could hike for hours. However, inside she is mellow and cuddly. She is also a velcro girl, and is content to follow her foster around everywhere, and is always incredibly excited when her foster walks through the door. At the end of the day, she is a reserved pup who has a cuddly and affectionate personality hidden underneath. She just needs a lot of love (and time) and her amazing personality will shine through!
In between cuddles and long walks, Peppermint Patty is working on some basic training. She is working on improving her confidence right now because she tends to be fearful of loud noises and car rides. Her forever home should continue this training to help her blossom into the confident dog she will undoubtedly become. She is working on leash training (she likes to walk right behind people), and is housetrained and crate trained currently. She's a good girl.
Peppermint Patty has established a daily routine with her foster:
"We wake up between 7-8:30. She then goes potty and will eat breakfast. Then we are off to work, where she either stays in the office or in the break room. When with other dogs (at work) she will be content and go to sleep, but she tends to whine if she is left alone without other animals (dogs or cats). Then after work we either dog stuff around the house or go out and do something. Pepper's great with either. She is ready for bed at 7 pm after dinner."
Peppermint Patty currently lives with 3 dogs of various sizes and has met loads of dogs while going with her foster to work both on and off leash. She has been great with all of them! At the beginning, she sometimes lets a growl slip but gets over it quickly and has never acted aggressively against any dogs she has interacted with. Also, as noted above, she tends to be much more open to being social with humans if she is in the presence of a dog she likes. This may be a helpful tool as she adjusts to her forever home. Furthermore, she has met a cat who she has spent time with for extended periods. They have a peaceful coexistence relationship.
Peppermint Patty would benefit greatly from being in an active home that can take her on plenty of long walks to get out her energy. She also needs a home with another confident dog who she can learn from. Finally, due to her fear of loud noises, she is not ideal for city dwellers. That being said, as she improves her confidence she will surely adjust to most environments. However, more than anything else, Peppermint Patty needs a home that will give her all the love and attention she deserves.
Peppermint Patty is only an option for those who have had a dog as an adult. Priority will be given to a home that has a dog and a confident dog at that! If there are children they need to be over the age of 8.
