Penny's Story

Meet Penny! She originally transferred to us a young pup from the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility in 2018.
Adopted in 2018, Penny returned to us in July of this year. She was originally listed as a Labrador/Boxer mix pup, but seeing her full adult size and markings, we now have her listed as a Basenji mix. At the end of the day, it's always a best guess!
Penny developed anxiety in her previous home which compounded over the years and became fear-based reactivity. We recommend reviewing her origin & progress stories below:

Penny's Return:
https://www.facebook.com/heartofgoldsshelter/posts/pfbid02whoN43cDPKKKExEqBHq8kNDkwHXBJbQxJfXndK3EhSgGXJ5puaaSwnpfwezrsCRFl

Penny's Progress:
https://www.facebook.com/heartofgoldsshelter/posts/pfbid02QEToHtcCTP6NbKebvtiZs3yPU3yPAyDeFVDvthiYo8fxSMV9SxP4qRALxSXyDm94l

Penny's most recent update:
https://www.facebook.com/heartofgoldsshelter/posts/pfbid05LK8sXsTrsnHiopZ1CFCYtcbbptJD5CPuaP12TEzHmHHpEgJ7F54Erm95udPgCiyl

Behavioral Considerations: In a foster home setting and being surrounded by those experienced with the nuances of dog behavior, Penny is thriving and enjoys her foster home filled with 5 dogs, one other foster dog (Rocket), and 4 cats.
As with any multi-animal household, there are multiple management techniques in place that help everyone peacefully co-exist and thrive. Penny will do best in a home that has either:
-No pets
-An owner with experience in safely managing a multi-dog or multi-animal household (she can sometimes get a little carried away when playing outdoors and is receptive when firmly asking her to slow down. Otherwise, it's back indoors for a short timeout.)
-An owner experienced with reactive dogs

Penny develops a heavy attachment to those she loves. She adores her foster mom and with love, patience, and a structured setting, she will also look at her future mom/dad as though you are her sun, her moon, and all her stars. A loyal gal indeed!

We want her to succeed in this second chance at adoption and are looking for an adopter that is not just excited about her adorable face and kissable cheeks (With consent! She's like a cat, affectionate on her terms!) but has the experience and means to care for a dog that is not looking for the mental overstimulation that dog parks provide. Penny prefers to get her exercise with her people and dogs she has built trust with, and who are respectful of her boundaries. We as humans can definitely empathize with that!
While Penny does enjoy gentle cuddles and down time, she is quite the track star and loves to sprint, explore, chase wild rabbits, and fetch during play time! A home what will keep her active in a safe & controlled environment is where she will thrive!

We will send a package of professional training sessions to her future home, to give Penny her best foot forward in a new environment. A trainer coming directly to an adopter's home for these sessions will ensure that she thrives and is helped along through another life change.

Regarding COVID-19 and other contagious illnesses: Please reschedule any visits if you are sick
