Penny's Story
Penny is an adorable 8-year-old Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, and Pomeranian mix weighing just under 7 pounds! This tiny sweetheart has spent her entire life in the same home, where she lived alongside another small dog and cats. Now, at eight years old, Penny is looking for a loving, patient family who will help her adjust to a new chapter in her life.

Penny is a sensitive little soul who can be shy and nervous when meeting new people or experiencing unfamiliar situations. She may need some time to feel comfortable, but underneath that initial uncertainty is an incredibly sweet little dog with so much love to give. Penny has no reported history of biting and has been described as a very gentle, affectionate companion. She has a preference for women and would likely feel most comfortable in a home with a female caregiver who can help her build confidence at her own pace. Penny has also lived with other small dogs and cats, and she generally enjoys the company of other dogs!

Despite her petite size, Penny has a few tricks up her sleeve! She knows the command "sit" and even used to know how to "spin," so we wouldn't be surprised if a little practice and some tasty encouragement helped her remember her old tricks. She's also crate trained and understands the cue "kennel," which can be helpful as she adjusts to a new routine. Penny currently eats Blue Buffalo Senior Small Breed dog food.

One area where Penny will need some additional patience and consistency is potty training. Although she has previous experience with house training, she will need some refreshing as she transitions into a new environment. Penny is familiar with using pee pads, and her future family should be prepared to establish a predictable potty schedule, offer frequent opportunities to go outside, and reward her successes. Like many small dogs, she may need a little extra encouragement and consistency, especially while adjusting to an unfamiliar home. A patient approach, positive reinforcement, and a dependable daily routine will go a long way toward helping her succeed.

Because Penny is naturally a little nervous and has spent her entire life in one familiar environment, we believe she would thrive in a quieter, more predictable household. A retired individual or couple, someone who spends plenty of time at home, or a family with older, respectful children could be a wonderful fit. Penny is not a fan of lots of commotion, loud environments, or constant activity, and would be happiest in a calm home where she can relax and feel secure. She's looking for someone who understands that trust takes time and that the smallest dogs sometimes need the biggest amount of patience.

An especially important consideration for Penny's future family is her dental health. Penny needs a professional dental procedure with extractions, and her adoption fee has been reduced to reflect this necessary veterinary expense. We want to be exceptionally transparent that providing Penny with this necessary dental care is a requirement of her adoption, not an optional recommendation. A dental procedure involving extractions can be a significant veterinary expense, potentially costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on the extent of treatment needed. It is imperative that Penny's next family is financially stable enough to provide this care in a timely manner and is fully prepared to accept that responsibility before adopting her. While we understand that unexpected veterinary expenses can be challenging, Penny deserves a home where her known medical needs can be addressed without unnecessary delays.

We also want prospective adopters to understand the long-term realities of owning a small-breed dog. Chihuahuas and other toy breeds are particularly susceptible to dental disease due to their small mouths and crowded teeth. Dental health is not simply a cosmetic concern; untreated dental disease can cause significant pain, infection, difficulty eating, and other health complications. Even after Penny receives her upcoming dental procedure, she may require additional professional cleanings, extractions, and ongoing dental maintenance throughout her lifetime. We are looking for an adopter who understands that responsible pet ownership includes being financially prepared for both routine and unexpected veterinary care. Penny's reduced adoption fee is intended to help offset her upcoming medical expenses, not to minimize the importance or urgency of addressing them. Our priority is ensuring that Penny receives the care she needs to remain comfortable, healthy, and happy for years to come.

At eight years old, Penny still has so much love and companionship to offer. She's a little dog with a tender heart who has known one home, one routine, and one way of life for many years. Starting over may feel overwhelming for her at first, but with gentle encouragement, patience, and the security of a loving family, we believe Penny has every opportunity to blossom into a wonderful companion.

Penny doesn't need a perfect home. She needs an understanding, committed, and financially prepared one. Someone who will celebrate her little victories, give her space when she's feeling unsure, prioritize her medical needs, and remind her every day that she's safe and loved.

Could you be the person who gives this tiny sweetheart the next loving chapter she deserves?
