Penelope's Story
***Penny is listed as "special needs" only because of her dietary needs. Currently, Penny is on a gently cooked raw diet and is doing excellent. Given her intestinal loss, she has struggled to digest larger amounts of kibble. She may need to be on a raw or fresh food diet long term. However, she does get kibble in moderation with each meal and in food puzzles. She can also have various treats, in moderation of course.**

Looking for beauty? Or brains? How about both? This girl is the whole Doberman package...smart as all get out with the gorgeous looks to go with it. To top it off, Penny is a walking miracle. This is a long bio, but there's a lot of things to say about our girl, Penny.

Penelope joined our rescue at 3 months old when she was brought in to the veterinary clinic by her breeder emaciated, not eating, vomiting and in poor condition. Penny had already had one surgery a week prior to manually correct an intussusception, a condition in which the small intestine telescopes in on itself and cuts off blood supply. This was initially caused by severe intestinal parasites left untreated. When Penny came back a week later with a relapse intussusception, her breeder could not afford a second surgery, let alone a more extensive one that would require surgical removal of part of her intestines. Unfortunately, she was taken home over the weekend despite medical advice that she would only get worse...and she did.

That following Monday her breeder brought her into the clinic to be euthanized. We heard about her at the very last minute and luckily she was relinquished into our care. She was immediately sent to a larger hospital, where she was taken into surgery immediately. When the surgeon opened her up, they found a septic abdomen from sitting over the weekend and necrotic intestines, a situation much more grave than any of us anticipated. In the middle of her surgery we were asked if we wanted to continue; the likelihood of her making it out of surgery and through recovery was slim. Her chances of making it past that...even lower. Long story short, Penny made it through surgery, through recovery, through the night at a 24 hour emergency hospital and even more shockingly, she was eating by the next day. Penny has never looked back.

Penny is one of the most resilient dogs we know. Every odd was stacked against her, yet Penny has never let any day pass her by without living it to the fullest. At just over 5 months and 28lbs and growing, meeting Penny you would never know she's survived all that she has. She is an energetic girl who loves to run her foster's acreage with her canine foster siblings. She thrives with adventure and is a phenomenal hiking parter. In true Dobie fashion, she is a shadow to her human and even at 5 months old, her recall is stellar. She can learn something new in what feels like seconds and in all honesty, she currently lives with two other puppies around her age and has blown them out of the water when it comes to training. She is HIGHLY food motivated! This girl is phenomenal in her crate and although we rarely say it for dogs her age, we consider her potty trained. She currently lives in a home with multiple other dogs and does well with all of them. Given her energy and desire to play, larger dogs tend to be a better fit for her and she is quite submissive with them. She can be a bit much for smaller dogs. She has also been around cats ever since coming into our rescue. She may love them more than they love her. ;-) Penny will thrive in a home who has Doberman or working dog experience. This girl is ride or die for her human and will need consistent training and physical and mental stimulation. We guarantee she will out shine any expectations.

Penny's adoption fee includes a contract for her spay and gastropexy when age appropriate (between 12-18 months.) It includes her microchip, vaccines, dewormings and flea/tick/heartworm prevention. If this girl sounds like she's the miracle you need in your life, reach out to us!
