Penelope's Story

Requirements:
-Penelope requires a compatible dog in the home to help her gain confidence
-If there are children in the home, they must be respectful of a dog's boundaries
-Penelope's home can be an apartment, condo, semi-detached, or detached home

Pup-sonality:
Looking for a calm, low-maintenance, and gentle dog who just wants a cozy bed and a soft blanket? Penelope might be exactly who you're looking for.

Penelope is a house-trained, well-mannered girl who enjoys the simple things in life: a comfy place to nap, a peaceful walk, and the occasional chest rub. She's independent by nature, but don't be surprised if she cuddles up with you in bed at night or greets you with her signature Chewbacca growl and gargoyle smile once you've earned her trust.

She walks beautifully on leash and handles grooming with ease—especially if you're using her favorite glove brush. She's not overly affectionate with everyone, but for the few special humans she bonds with, she's incredibly sweet and loyal. Penelope loves to relax in her bed or on a soft blanket. She can be a picky eater sometimes but can't resist a hot dog.

Penelope is slow to warm up, and that's okay. During her first few days in foster, she stayed on her bed and observed the world. But by day three, she was up on the couch, starting to trust. With patience, kindness, and a little routine, Penelope will let you into her heart. And when she does, her affection feels like a true gift.

Penelope would do best in a calm, quiet home with respectful children and another relaxed, sociable dog her size or slightly larger. She's not one for chaos, loud noise, or high-energy environments. Instead, she thrives in peaceful surroundings where she can nap, observe, and gradually open up to her people.

She won't jump all over you or demand constant attention—but when she chooses you, it's incredibly special. Penelope is loyal, low-key, and deeply endearing. If you're the kind of person who understands that trust takes time, and you're willing to go at her pace, you'll be rewarded with a truly unique bond. Her foster family says “Be patient. She's a great dog.” Penelope's ready to find her people. Could that be you?

Medical Note: Penelope is recovering from heartworm disease (microfilaria negative). The adopters MUST agree to keep Penelope on Simperica Trio monthly until she is re-tested (at SCAR's vet and expense) in September 2026 which will determine whether she is then heartworm-free or requires an additional treatment. Penelope MUST stay on a SCAR-approved heartworm preventative monthly for the rest of her life to avoid reinfection. A dog that gets infected with heartworm disease twice in their life can experience significant damage to their heart, lungs, and other organs.
