Paulo's Story

One of our longest term hound residents, Paulo, had a weekend getaway! Elizabeth has been so kind to offer "weekend fosters" for a few of our pups that greatly need a break. Here's what she has to say about Paulo:

"Paulo has stellar house manners and had no accidents! After Paulo made a cursory inspection of my condo, I patted for Paulo to hop up on the sofa and he just stared. As such, I lifted Paulo on the sofa and he immediately got off. However, Paulo must have decided furniture was ok as Paulo walked over to the bed and looked at me questioningly. When I said yes, Paulo immediately jumped up on the bed. Paulo never got on the sofa and whenever Paulo wanted to take a nap, he just got on the bed. He was very comfortable in the condo. He alternated between napping on the bed and on the floor near my desk, while I was working. When I would go to sleep, Paulo would come up and snuggle for a bit and then sleep at the foot of the bed. He also loved to nap at the foot of the bed! Paulo was quiet inside my condo. When Paulo is stretching he makes the most adorable snorting sounds, it is hysterical.

Paulo is good with one or two flights of stairs but he prefers the elevator. I live on the 16th floor and I normally walk down the stairs and up, but Paulo put his paw down and made his opinion known. A neighbor even commented on how well he did in the elevator, Paulo looked at him like bud otherwise I have to walk so yeah go elevators. My neighbor contends Paulo must be use to elevators as he rode like a pro!

Paulo loves loves going for walks. While Paulo was uneasy with the city, he was polite just a smidge on edge. In contrast, on wooded trails Paulo was very relaxed. When people would ask to pet him, Paulo was shy with individuals but if the individual had a dog then Paulo was much more comfortable. was a pro at interacting with dogs, if the dogs were giving off friendly vibes he was polite but if they were giving off non-friendly vibes Paulo just stayed by my side or backed away, especially with the little dogs. I ran into individuals I know and Paulo was very content to stay while we chatted and Paulo socialized with their dogs. As Paulo seemed to enjoy nature more than city, I took Paulo to the wooded trails near me for our evening walks and Paulo was content. Paulo had no objections to bikes, scoters, etc. whizzing past him. While I live in Alexandria, I am close to the W&OD trails and we frequently encounter deer. Paulo reacted to deer in that he kept howling and pulling to the deer. While I had no difficultly in keeping Paulo walking he kept howling and trying to return but was responsive.

I met my friends at the state park where we enjoyed hiking on trails and the one trail took us to a small beach, where the beach photo was taken. There were a lot of kids on the beach and Paulo kept trying to drift to the kids. When kids would run up to Paulo, he was much more relaxed than when an adult would approach, though he was very polite with all. I think Paulo would love to have 2-legged siblings.

Paulo would on occasion just jump up and almost clap his paws while walking, it is adorable! Paulo does not seem to know the usual sit, lay, paw etc. though he learned very quickly what belly rub meant and loved his tummy tickles.

The first night, I went to give him a pill that I broke in two and put into a pill pocket but Paulo politely refused. I never gave him any meds and he was stellar. I would have had no inclination that he needed meds as he seemed content.

I strongly believe Paulo will make a wonderful addition to a family and he will thrive with a canine sibling as well as 2-legged siblings.

If you have any questions or would like additional pictures, please let me know. As per usual, please provide anyone interested in Paulo my contact and I am happy to share anything I know.

Paulo is a great guy and while he is initially reserved he quickly opens up and is such a lovely pup! Thank you for allowing me to spend the weekend with Paulo, I had a wonderful time and I hope Paulo did as well."

If you are interested in meeting this sweet fella, stop on by the shelter sometime this week!
