Patch AZ's Story

Meet Patch —

Location: Mesa, AZ

Age: 5 years; 50 lbs., male

Nickname: Mr. Wiggle (you'll understand immediately)

Patch is a beautiful black and white retired English setter hunting dog who traded in the field life for couch cushions, belly rubs, and the joy of discovering that being a house pet is absolutely his calling. He had never lived indoors before rescue, but you'd never know it now — he has embraced the good life with the enthusiasm of a dog who finally realized he's allowed on the furniture.

And yes, he is genuinely the softest dog you will ever pet. It's like hugging a warm cloud.

Personality & Activity Level

Patch is a gentle, mostly calm boy with a heart made of marshmallow fluff. Indoors, he wants to be touching you at all times — in your lap, on your shoulder, or materializing beside you like a teleporting cuddleseeking missile.

Outside, he perks up and loves to run around the yard with his foster brothers. He gets very excited for walks and even more excited for food.

His signature move? The Happy Dance is performed at mealtime.

Social Skills

Patch is a peoplelover first and foremost. He lights up when he sees his humans and will leap onto the couch to snuggle like he's been waiting all day for that moment.

With other dogs, he's selective:

• Great with other setters

• Fine with cats

• A little nervous around large dogs (he's working on it!)

• Slowly warming up to his St. Bernard foster brother

• Mostly ignores dogs on walks

• Has politely accepted pets from passing humans and kids

He rarely barks — unless you dare leave the house without him, in which case he will file a formal complaint.

Home Requirements

• Physical fence required

• Best as an only dog so he can soak up all the love

• A human who is home often — Patch has some separation anxiety and thrives with companionship

Training & Manners

Patch likely has old hunting training, but his commands are still a mystery. What he does know:

• He sits beautifully... but only to communicate his needs

• He responds to his name

• He comes when called

• He is fully housebroken (with belly bands helping early on)

His “I need something” signal is adorable: he simply sits in front of you and stares meaningfully.

Crate & Indoor Life

Patch is cratetrained from his hunting days and will go in if asked, but now that he's discovered couches, blankets, and pillows, he prefers to be snuggled up beside his humans. He's adjusted beautifully to indoor life and is thriving.

Leash Skills

Patch LOVES walks. The moment someone touches the leash; he breaks into his happy dance.

He pulls a bit at first because the world is exciting, but he's easily corrected and walks nicely once he settles. Not a runner yet — he's more of a sniffandstroll explorer.

Health

Patch came into rescue with no prior medical care, but he's now:

• Neutered

• Vaccinated

• Microchipped

• Had a dental cleaning

• Had a congenital hernia repaired (lifechanging!)

His hernia repair made him feel so much better — he's now bouncy, wiggly, and full of joy. He does a cute little bunnyhop run with his back legs, which only adds to his charm.

Funniest Patch Moments

• His dramatic A wooyawn announces every nap's end

• He launches himself onto the couch like a 50lb love missile

• He lies down to eat from his slow feeder because standing is simply too much work

• His wigglebutt greeting could brighten anyone's day

Why You'll Love Him

Patch is the definition of a heart dog — affectionate, goofy, gentle, and endlessly grateful. He wants nothing more than to be loved, touched, and included. If you're looking for a loyal shadow, a soft snuggle buddy, and a dog who greets you like you hung the moon, Patch is your guy. He may have started life as a working dog, but he's ready to spend the rest of it as someone's cherished companion.

Current Location: Mesa, AZ
Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US, within 1,000 miles of the dog's current location. A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) is required for transport. There will be an additional charge of $75.00 required to offset the cost of obtaining a CVI. In most cases, our transport team will be able to arrange transport of your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. You may apply for a dog outside of the 1,000 mile radius, but you must be willing to make arrangements for transport, which may include flying at your expense, driving to a location within the 1,000 mile radius, or obtaining an independent transport at your expense.
