Paprika's Story

Meet Paprika! Paprika is one of those dogs who quietly works her way into your heart. With her soft eyes and gentle nature, she has a calm, easy presence that makes time spent with her feel special. As one of our longer-stay residents, she's been patiently waiting for her chance at a home of her own, and she's more than ready to share just how special she is. She's the kind of girl who's happy to stroll by your side, take in her surroundings, and check in with you along the way.

Over time, Paprika has really shown how thoughtful and responsive she can be. She walks nicely on leash, often checking in with her handler, and has been working on her manners, including sitting for treats and learning to stay close by your side. She's very food-motivated (snacks are definitely the way to her heart), which has made her engaged in training and eager to learn. Volunteers have noted she's smart, attentive, and enjoys having a job to do, especially when treats are involved.

Because Paprika is heartworm positive, she's currently limited to slow, easygoing activity—but even within those limits, she's shown little glimpses of a more playful side, like wanting to run and have fun. Even with those restrictions, she seems to genuinely enjoy her walks and time spent with people, often described as sweet, loving, and easy to be around.

Paprika will need to be the only dog in the home, as she does not do well with other dogs. She's happiest having her own space and soaking up all the love and attention for herself.

She is currently heartworm positive, so she'll need treatment and continued activity restrictions while she heals, but she's already proven she can handle a slower pace beautifully.

Paprika has been waiting patiently for her person. If you're looking for a gentle, affectionate companion who will bond closely with you, she might just be your girl.

Paprika at a glance:

Age: Adult
Personality: Gentle, mellow, affectionate, with a quiet playful side
Training: Walks well on leash, checks in with handler, knows sit (and is learning more), very treat-motivated and engaged
Favorite Activities: Slow walks, sniffing, spending time with her people, enjoying treats

SPCA of Southwest Michigan's Adoption Policy
We have same day adoptions! You are welcome to visit our shelter anytime during our open hours. When you visit, you can either look through the kennel first or go into a meet and greet room with an available animal of interest. In the meet and greet room, we will let you spend time with the animal and read off their file. If you have a dog at home, you can bring them along with you to do a dog-to-dog meet and greet. The main question we ask is if you own or rent your home. If you rent we check your pet policy. Bring your pet policy with you; as that is the quickest way for us to check. Once that clears, all you would need to do is fill out an adoption contract and pay their adoption fee. They would go home with you after that! If you are adopting a cat, you are welcome to bring your own carrier with you. We do have carriers to borrow or cardboard boxes to send home with you if you do not have one. If you are adopting a dog, you are welcome to bring your own leash and collar. We do have leashes and collars to send home with you as well. Holds We offer holds over the phone and in-person. The hold fee is $50 and is non-refundable. Holds over the phone are for 24 hours and holds in-person are for 48 hours.
