Ozzy's Story

**Located in New Hampshire**

Meet Ozzy!

Ozzy is an adorable 10 month old Shih Tzu/Poodle mix weighing around 20 pounds, and this handsome little guy has so much love and personality to give! He’s sweet, playful, affectionate, and incredibly smart. However, Ozzy is looking for a very specific type of forever home with someone who understands that building trust and confidence takes patience, consistency, and a little extra understanding.

Ozzy is a good boy who can become overwhelmed or frightened in unfamiliar situations, particularly when meeting new people or dogs. When he’s feeling unsure, he may bark or growl as a way of communicating that he needs some space. This doesn’t automatically mean he intends to bite, but it is important that his future family understands and respects those signals rather than pushing him beyond his comfort level. With patience, positive reinforcement, yummy treats, and the opportunity to approach new situations at his own pace, Ozzy has shown that he can warm up and become a wonderful little companion.

Ozzy does well with other dogs once he’s had time to get comfortable, and he absolutely LOVES to play! He can be a bit of a rough and tumble player, so we think a friendly, confident dog who enjoys playing and can help show him the ropes would be an ideal companion. He currently lives with a larger dog and a cat in his foster home and has been doing well with both. Slow, thoughtful introductions will be important as he adjusts to any new canine friends.

Ozzy is also doing wonderfully with many of his basic skills! He’s house trained, although he doesn’t always clearly communicate when he needs to go outside, so a consistent potty routine is important. He’s making progress with crate training and enjoys keeping himself busy with stuffed Kongs, bones, and other enrichment activities. He walks nicely on a leash without pulling, although bicycles can sometimes trigger a reaction. He’s very food motivated and responds beautifully to positive reinforcement. He has also shown no concerns with food or toy guarding in his foster home.

Ozzy’s ideal home will be with an experienced, dog-savvy adopter who understands canine body language, fear based behaviors, and the importance of respecting a dog’s boundaries. He is not a good match for first time dog owners. A quieter, low traffic household without very young children would be best, as too many unfamiliar people coming and going could be overwhelming for him. We would especially love to see him in a home with another friendly, playful, confident dog, although the right match and proper introductions are essential. His family should be willing to continue working on his confidence and training through positive reinforcement, patience, and structure.

Ozzy is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and will have his New Hampshire health certificate prior to adoption. He’s a sweet, smart, playful little guy who has already made wonderful progress in foster care, and we know he has so much potential to continue blossoming in the right environment.

Ozzy doesn’t need a perfect family. He needs an understanding one. Someone who can recognize when he’s uncomfortable, give him the space he needs, celebrate his progress, and love him for the wonderful little dog he is. With the right person by his side, we truly believe Ozzy can become an incredible lifelong companion.

https://www.livefreerescue.com/adoption-application
