Otto's Story

Meet Otto! Otto is one of the smartest, most devoted, eager-to-please boys we’ve met.

Otto is proof that you absolutely can teach an old dog new tricks. When he hears that unmistakeable crinkle of the treat bag, he reports immediately for duty ~ eyes bright, ready to earn his cheese. Otto approaches training like a man who has just been promoted to assistant to the regional manager.

Otto is intelligent, loyal, and deeply devoted to his people. He would thrive with a family that appreciates a dog who wants a job and takes it seriously. He's currently interning as security guard for his foster family and got an "exceeds expectations" on his most recent performance review. He alerts his humans {and any suspicious outsiders} with a bark at the window, then heads over to the front door to ensure the perimeter is secure. Once his humans acknowledge the “danger” and assure him the coast is clear, he stands down. During his breaks from this work, he enjoys laying out on the deck where he can soak up the sun, people/pup watch, and bark at delivery people.

Otto adores being around his people and will stay glued to your side as much as possible. He has mastered the art of snuggling and loves sleeping in bed with you. His favorite activities are full body massages and head scritches. He is also fully treat obsessed.

Otto is a 10/10 house guest: housetrained, polite on the leash, and always down for a good car ride. He doesn't get into trouble when left home alone, and sleeps peacefully through the night. Otto can also entertain himself for long periods of time by destroying stuffed toys (loves anything with squeakers) and gnawing on Benebones. When he wants something, (a walk, potty break, food, a toy), he simply sits by you and stares with the kind of look that burns through your soul until you give in.

Otto was a full couch potato when he arrived to his foster home because he was dealing with a number of untreated medical issues that left him deeply uncomfortable. As he began healing, his personality blossomed and he revealed himself to be quite the playful, active man! Otto enjoys exploring the outdoors on long walks and has done well on a variety of trails, where he loves smelling all the smells. He would love a family that will take him on lots of walks and that has a fenced-in yard where he can run, play fetch and tug of war, and get the occasional zoomies. He would probably be fine living with a canine companion if properly introduced. It is less likely that he wants a feline friend, although you never know.

Otto is being treated for a skin infection with low-dose steroids and medicated baths. He is such a good boy that he will actually climb into the bath tub on his own and quietly stand for his baths. It's possible he'll will need long term maintenance to keep this condition under control. He also has hypothyroidism which will require him to stay on daily medication for life and to have periodic blood tests to check the dosage.

He can be wary of strangers (especially male ones), so it's best to hold introductions to new folks on neutral ground. He'll quickly settle once the introduction is made, though he does not like being approached too quickly or too directly, or receiving pets he didn't ask for. He's a "less is more" guy when it comes to people he doesn't know.

Apply to adopt this devoted, squeaker-slaying gentleman today! You won't regret it.

Otto is approximately 10 years old and 63 lbs.

Fostered in Burke, VA
Please apply at MirisHaven.org
