Otis *Adoption Pending*'s Story

Current Location: Baltimore, MD

Otis, lovingly called Ottie, is a gentle, snuggly soul who believes he belongs exactly where you are. Ideally on your lap. Or leaning fully against you. Or quietly sitting on top of you, unaware that fifty three pounds is not technically lap sized.

His energy is nicely balanced. He enjoys walks and exploring, but he is just as happy lounging on the couch and soaking up affection. He matches the rhythm of the home. Calm when you are calm. Ready to move when you are. He would enjoy regular walks but does not need a high intensity lifestyle.

Otis is house trained and crate trained. He sleeps through the night without a sound and goes into his crate easily when he knows food is coming. He does not appear destructive and may not need a crate long term, but he is perfectly comfortable using one. He walks well on leash with mild zig zag curiosity and shows no reactivity to other dogs.

He is excellent with dogs and lived peacefully with cats in his former foster home. He was respectful with them and did well. He also enjoys chewing on his bone and has shown no signs of resource guarding. Outside, squirrels are still very suspicious creatures and worthy of investigation, and he will show you his athleticism if he sees one nearby.

Otis is affectionate, gentle, and friendly with new people. He can be slightly startled by quick movements but recovers easily. He has been quiet so far with no barking, making him a good fit for apartment or urban living. He does get a bit enthusiastic when excited and may be jumpy, so very small children could be knocked over by accident.

Otis was found chained, emaciated, and neglected. He has gained weight and is now fifty three pounds, though he should likely be closer to sixty. Despite what he has been through, he is sweet as pie, trusting, loving, and deeply affectionate.

Otis would do well in most homes that value companionship, comfort, and a dog who wants nothing more than to be close to his people. He is not looking to run marathons. He is looking to belong.

**************
This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. The disease was treated while in foster care. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Operation Paws for Homes's Adoption Policy
Our organization provides pet adoption services to families located in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania and neighboring states. We believe in responsible adoptions and strive to work with each adopter to find a good match for their home and lifestyle. Our adoption process includes completion of an application, a vet check, an interview, and a personal “meet and greet” where the family can meet and interact with their potential new four-legged family member. Throughout this process, we work to ensure each family and dog are the right fit for each other. We are fortunate to have some wonderful and active volunteers who help OPH find forever homes for over 1,000 dogs and cats a year. The key to that statement is - volunteer! Please remember that our organization is driven by caring individuals who give their personal time to help rescue these animals and provide them with the opportunity to find an amazing future! In addition to adoptions, volunteers carry out education and outreach events throughout the area, and conduct donation drives for our partner shelters in the south. Our goal is to offer a second chance to dogs and cats abandoned in shelters and out of time. Sadly, without our help, some of these adoptable animals would face almost certain euthanasia - sometimes within days of arriving at the shelter. Each year we rescue hundreds of wonderful dogs and cats. We work hard to unite them with forever families who will give them the life and love they deserve. These animals are saved only because of the dedication of our incredible adopters, fosters, donors, and volunteers.
