I might also be the smartest dog you’ve ever met. I pick up on things so quickly and I’m a star training student who loves to learn. If you have the energy and patience for a young, active dog in your life, I’d love to be the one! I know I can make you laugh every single day at my silly antics. And I can’t wait to curl up by your side to feel the connection that we’ll have. Please give me a chance! I’m so ready for my new life to begin.

I’m a darling, 1 year old, 61-pound bundle of spunk and fun energy, with the cutest freckled face, soft fur, and a spirited, happy, delightful personality. I was originally transferred to Wayside from a rural shelter in Arkansas that didn’t have space for me. I had never had a home before, and I spent way too much of my puppyhood growing up in homeless shelters. I finally got adopted, but things didn’t work out for me there. My owner let me run loose in the neighborhood, which isn’t good for anyone. So now I’m back at Wayside, searching for a home that will be a better match for me. It’s stressful and difficult for an active young dog like me to be stuck in a kennel for most of the day. I’m making the most of it by enrolling in classes and learning new things whenever possible. Once I get settled into my new home, I hope to be able to relax and just be a typical family dog. I just need someone to believe in me. I hope that will be you.

I’ve been working hard to learn manners, focus, and impulse control through Wayside’s Peace Academy and Waifs with Wisdom programs. I’m one smart cookie and I love to learn, so I’m happy to get to spend extra time with my friends on all sorts of training. Some of the things I’ve learned so far include the Sit, Down, Spin, Place, and Touch commands. My Wayside trainers use positive reinforcement, which works well for me. When I feel frustrated or overly excited, I’m learning to calmly sit in order to get the things I want. Learning to stay calm is tough for an active dog, but I try my best, and it’s crazy how quickly I pick up on and understand new training concepts! When I make appropriate choices, I bask in the praise, encouragement, and tasty treats that I get in return. I hope you will continue my training! It will be a great way for us to bond, it will help me learn boundaries, and it will reinforce everything I’ve already learned. My adoption includes a private session with my trainer, so I can show you what I know. In my new home, I hope to have a routine that I can count on.

I like to stay busy! I’m super playful, and I never, ever turn down a fun game of fetch or tug. I’ll play for hours! I hope you have plenty of time to spend with me. Young dogs need a lot of attention. Whatever you like to do, please count me in! Daily exercise is important to me, including walking in the neighborhood or on the local trails, running around in a fenced yard, hiking in the woods, or so much more. I like to explore my surroundings and check out all the great smells. I want to do it all! After my exercise, I love to hang out with you and soak up all the attention as you pet me. There is so much of life I simply haven’t experienced yet, but I’m game for whatever adventures await. Sometimes I get startled by things like loud noises or fast-moving traffic. Please be understanding with me as I figure out the big world. These things take time.

A couple of my favorite volunteers frequently take me on field trips to give me a break from shelter life. Ah...my favorite activity! I’m so smart that I recognize the harness they use for outings versus just a normal walk, and I get so excited and happy to go! I jump right in the car and ride like a champ, ready for whatever adventure awaits. I am a fantastic hiking buddy and I love all the trails in KC. I keep a nice pace, and I walk beautifully with my harness. I’m interested and friendly with other people I see along the way, but I keep walking without being reactive. If people ask to pet me, I am the perfect gentleman, leaning in for maximum closeness and love. I’m such a goofy, happy, fun, and super sweet dog. Back at the shelter, I settle in for a nap, calm, content, and ready to have sweet dreams about my special day.

I was recently a radio star! I walked right into the studio like I owned the place...happy, friendly, loving, and goofy, of course. Everyone fell in love with me as I greeted them and showed off my smarts. I hope everyone in Kansas City was listening to my radio debut!

I can scale a chain-link fence, so if you have a fenced yard, it will need to be a 6-foot privacy fence. And please supervise me whenever I’m outside, to help me stay safe and secure. I need a home as your only animal, please. I’ve hung out with other dogs during my time at Wayside, but my play can be too rough and rowdy for others. With people, I love everyone I meet! I’m looking for a home with active people over the age of 6 who enjoy spending time with me, and I’ll need to meet any kids under the age of 10. I hope you will be kind, consistent, and calm with me, making me an important, involved member of the family.

Please don’t pass me by! Don’t all dogs deserve a chance to be a beloved member of a family
