Meet Annie - UPDATE

FEB 14- Annie has really proven how resilient dogs really are and has completely come out of her shell. She is now showing us how happy and playful she is. Her favorite thing is to ZOOM around our dog yards. She loves being chased and has sooooo much fun. She is even seeking it out when brought outside! Annie has also proven to be quite a snuggler, she loves to climb right up in your lap and give your ear nibbles. She is turning out to be quite a wonderful dog!! Her walks are going very well, she is doing great meeting new people when she is out and about and other dogs as well. She even had another large dog rush up to her unexpectedly and had no reaction. We would love nothing more than to see Annie bust out of here and find her new home!! Is it with you!?!?!

VAS got a little hard a few weeks ago, two small pitties were brought in as strays. They were scared, shaking, defecating everywhere, TERRIFIED. They had small cuts and wounds on their faces, noses, and necks; nails very overgrown, ribs sticking out. Worst of all writhing on leash, fighting coming in to the building, so scared that when one person handed the leash to another it was instant fight or flight reaction. Then it was flinching the first time being fed because the bowl was held over their head, biting at the kennel bars till their gums were bleeding because they didn’t know where they were. That kind of day….it’s a hard one.

So here we are, Orphan Annie she has come around, slowly, steadily, with lots of patience. She has built trust with the staff and volunteers; has learned to walk on a leash. Annie understands she now has warm bed and 2 warm meals a day.

Annie we think is around the 1 year old mark. She definitely has flight or fight reactions on board. She seems the more fearful and sheltered of the two but also the more dominant and self-assured, if that makes sense. Annie needed very slow and calm introductions to new staff and volunteers. No direct eye contact, it was let her smell, give her a few treats, let her accept you. She has meet everyone well with this kind of gentle approach and is doing very well here at the shelter. She is very calm and sweet in her demeanor once she knows you and has been doing very well on her walk program.

For adoption purposes….we need someone who has a good canine skill set, who knows body language and dog behavior. Who can tell when she is getting worked up and knows how to handle the situation. Someone who really is a MOM or DAD; she needs to be socialized and exposed to the world in a safe and proper manner. Her world, we suspect, has been very small, and yes she is comfy at VAS, but it is her new security blanket. Annie needs to be shown the whole world out there and have a guide to take her on that journey. . Her new home will be without children- no exception, and no cats or other dogs. Annie will take some time and work to warm up to you and we would like someone to solely work on that if possible.

If you have that skill set and think you can help Annie through a foster to adopt situation or even just help her while she is posted for adoption. Please email animal.services@vancouver.ca with your information, household situation, dog experience and we can see about setting up a meet and greet.

Our adoption fee is $332.64 (including tax) for all dogs/puppies. Our sweet senior dogs (7+ year olds) are $101.92 to adopt. ALL adoptions include the spay/neuter, first set of shots, microchip and a free vet check! Hours for adoption viewings are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am until 6 pm. Please be advised that most of our dogs are strays, so we typically do not have background history on them. To meet any our pets, please visit the Vancouver Animal Services Shelter at 1280 Raymur Avenue in East Vancouver, or call 604-871-6885
