OREO's Story
Oreo is a young dog who’s having a very hard time in the shelter, and it’s clear this environment is not where he’s meant to be. He’s shy, sensitive, and still trying to figure out how to feel safe in a world that can seem overwhelming to him. Shelter life has been especially tough on him, and while he’s doing his best, what Oreo really needs is the chance to decompress in a calm home with someone who can move at his pace.

Underneath all of that uncertainty is a gentle dog who wants comfort and connection. Once Oreo settles, he leans into affection and seeks reassurance from the people he trusts. He has a soft, sweet side that’s easy to miss in a shelter setting, but it’s there — and we truly believe that with patience, stability, and kindness, Oreo could blossom outside of the kennel.

Oreo is looking for a very specific kind of home: one that is quiet, predictable, and understanding. He will need an adopter who can give him time to adjust, help him build confidence, and not expect too much too fast. He’s especially uncomfortable on leash right now and is still learning basic skills that many dogs pick up earlier in life, so he’ll need someone committed to going slowly and helping him feel secure every step of the way.

Oreo also needs to be the only pet in the home. He is extremely uncomfortable around other dogs and is not a fit for a multi-dog household. Because he can be easily overwhelmed, an adult-only home or one with older, dog-savvy teens would likely be the best match for him.

Oreo isn’t the kind of dog who will walk into a new home and instantly know what to do — but that doesn’t mean he won’t get there. It means he needs someone willing to see past how hard the shelter has been for him and give him the chance he hasn’t had yet. We know there is more to Oreo than what he’s able to show here, and we are urgently hoping to find a rescue partner or very patient, experienced adopter who can help him finally feel safe enough to let that side of himself come through.

If you have a quiet home, a gentle approach, and room in your heart for a dog who needs someone in his corner, Oreo may be waiting for you.

To complete adoption questionnaire: https://hamiltonmcnj.seamlessdocs.com/f/AdoptionApplication
To see other available animals: https://www.hamiltonnj.com/173/Pets-Available-for-Adoption

Hamilton Township Animal Shelter cannot offer any guarantees on the age, health, temperament, personality or mental disposition of any pet.
