Onyx's Story
🐾 Behind the Bark: Onyx

Onyx is two years old and a lot of dog packed into a fairly small package.

This boy is high octane when he puts his jets on. Give him some room to run and he'll make good use of it, and if there's a ball or squeaky toy involved, even better. Onyx is very ball motivated and has fetch figured out pretty well. He'll chase it down, bring it back, and happily do it again. Sometimes, though, the return trip needs a little embellishment. Instead of coming straight back, he'll take a detour, circle around you, make another lap, and then deliver the ball as if that had been the route all along.

Onyx loves having someone participate. Chase him around, talk to him, throw his ball, and he'll happily return the enthusiasm.

Depending on who you are, you may get a very different introduction to Onyx. Some visitors walking past his area get what one volunteer calls his "jump scare," a sudden round of barking from a dog who seems quite pleased with the performance. People he knows may get something entirely different. You might not even realize he's there until you're standing in front of him, where you'll find Onyx sitting quietly behind the kennel door wearing his best sad shelter-dog expression, looking at you as if to ask, "Are you here to save me?"

Open the door, though, and the act disappears. Depending on the day, he can walk very nicely on a leash. Other times he's got somewhere he'd rather be, and when he pulls, you quickly find out just how much strength is hiding in that compact body.

And eventually, the jets do shut off. Once he's gotten some of that energy out, Onyx is perfectly happy to slow things down for pets and back scratches.

There is one part of Onyx that his future home needs to take seriously. He originally came to the rescue from someone who loved him very much and didn't want to give him up, but problems between Onyx and another dog in the home eventually made keeping them together unworkable.

Onyx is reactive to both dogs and cats and needs to be the only animal in his home. Even if he appears uninterested in another animal, that shouldn't be taken as an invitation for an introduction. Because of his strength, energy, and physical style of play, a home without small children would also be the better fit.

Onyx isn't a low-key dog, and pretending otherwise wouldn't do him any favors. He's strong, energetic, occasionally ridiculous, and capable of turning a simple game of fetch into his own personal racetrack. Give him an outlet for all that energy and some attention once he's finished burning it off, and there's a very affectionate dog underneath it all.

That's our Onyx.Animals can be seen at 3365 Freeland Road, Saginaw, MI 48604

Visit us on Facebook!

Donations can be made via paypal under Amazing Grace Animal Rescue or by check or cash!
