Ollie's Story
Ollie is a 2 yr old, 14# male miniature poodle that recently came into the program from a breeder. He is transitioning well to becoming a household pet, in part because he has other dogs in the home to “show him the ropes”. Ollie does great with dogs of all sizes, and the foster says he should have another dog in his new home, along with a secure fenced yard.
Ollie is housebroken as long as he gets out every 4-6 hrs during the daytime. At night, he can sleep in his crate, on a dog bed, or in bed with his person – he’s never messed his crate. Friendly meeting new people –shy at first, but becomes your best friend within 10 minutes. Loves attention, but is not needy. He likes being held, or being able to sit in your lap or next to you. If he wants attention, he will gently jump up against your legs. Has been fine with the respectful children (with previous dog experience) that he has met – we think he’d enjoy kids 10 and up that won’t play too rough or accidentally drop him. No experience with cats, but he does ignore the large birds in his foster home. Ollie knows his name, and comes when you call him. Like all young dogs, he would benefit from obedience training. Not a barker. Rode in the front passenger seat of the car and did well. Probably hasn’t had toys before, so he isn’t interested in them yet, but does like a good chew bone – has a large nylabone that he carries (or drags) around. No inappropriate chewing. Good eater, and likes treats. Hasn’t had much leash experience, but is OK being walked on leash. Fine going up/down stairs.
Ollie will need regular grooming – up to 5 times/year. Be sure you can afford this ongoing expense, as the life span for small dogs can be 15 or more yr. Ollie has tight, curly hair and will need to be brushed AND combed at least weekly. If you hold him in your lap while you do this he tolerates it well.
He has been neutered, is current on distemper and rabies vaccinations, and has been heartworm tested (negative). A microchip has been inserted, and is registered to Second Chance. This active, friendly, easy going little guy has a $350 adoption fee. Call 651-771-5662 if you are interested in meeting him.
