Oliver's Story

Introducing Oliver—because apparently someone took a gentle old soul, wrapped him in 80 pounds of Great Pyrenees fluff, gave him the composure of a retired gentleman on vacation, and then added a tiny button labeled “adventure mode.” Oliver is 512 years old, generally calm, and sweet enough to make a bakery feel underqualified. He can stroll past barking dogs without giving them the satisfaction of a response, ride quietly in the car, and sleep through the sort of household commotion that would have the rest of us checking the weather and our insurance policies. But show him a leash and suddenly this dignified cloud has places to be.

Apply to adopt Oliver:
https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app

Oliver is being fostered in Sand Springs, OK. His adopter must personally pick him up there. We do not transport.

Oliver came to us because his family was facing serious health challenges and could no longer keep up with his care. He arrived with a wound that had struggled to heal for years; with antibiotics, it is now healing nicely. He also tested positive for heartworms and is undergoing treatment. Oliver takes medication easily and handles baths with surprising grace for someone wearing approximately three bath towels’ worth of fur. Oliver is the sort of dog who likes to get to know you before unveiling his entire personality. He may seem a little reserved at first, but give him some time and a belly rub, and you’ll discover that you have signed a contract you were not permitted to read. He isn’t pushy about asking for attention—until you start giving it. Then comes the gentle nudge: Excuse me, your hand has stopped working. Shall I call someone? He’ll let you know when he’s had his fill, although his definition of “enough belly rubs” may differ considerably from yours.

Oliver gets along well with other dogs and has a lovely sense of social etiquette. He is calm and careful around smaller dogs. With larger dogs and puppies, he’s happy to play if they’re interested. If they aren’t, he doesn’t insist on holding a mandatory team-building exercise. He simply settles near his people instead. He does not try to take other dogs’ food, though he may politely remind a housemate that the meal in his bowl has not yet been released to the public. A playful dog companion would be a wonderful match for him once he is cleared to return to normal activity. Cats remain an unknown. Oliver has noticed a neighbor’s cat and has not shown much interest, and his foster has not seen him fixate on small animals. That’s encouraging, but it isn’t the same as living with a cat, so introductions would need to be thoughtful and supervised. Oliver has also met a young child around three or four and a teenager who came toward him at a run. Both times, he stood still and accepted the attention. Apparently his response to an enthusiastic greeting is to become an exceptionally fluffy statue. He is pleased to have visitors, although he may announce an unfamiliar arrival before deciding the guest is perfectly welcome. When his foster’s ex-husband first came to the house, Oliver barked; once his foster brought him in, Oliver relaxed and was happy to meet him. His usual yard commentary is similarly straightforward: “I see someone out there.” He may also join in when another dog barks, because apparently the neighborhood watch has a group chat.

Oliver’s energy level is about a 4 out of 10. He loves car rides, walks, new places, and meeting people, but he also appreciates a long nap. He hops around with excitement when the leash appears and heads for the door as if you’ve just announced an all-expenses-paid vacation. After a little time to settle, he walks beautifully on leash, stays to the left, and pays little attention to barking dogs. In the car, he jumps right into the back of the SUV, sits or lies down, and rides quietly. He has correctly determined that driving is the human’s responsibility. This boy takes storms, vacuum cleaners, barking dogs, and even the sound of gunfire in stride. He has no known dramatic fears, does not show escape-artist tendencies, and does not chew things he shouldn’t. Toys have earned a little curiosity, but he hasn’t quite decided what all the excitement is about. Fetch is also a no from Oliver. If you wanted the object, why did you throw it away? He is waiting for a reasonable explanation. What he is beginning to enjoy is being silly. Every once in a while, Oliver starts to let loose, then seems to catch himself and stop. His foster thinks there is more of his personality waiting to emerge as he feels safe enough to be himself. He has recently begun enjoying a run across the yard and a bark alongside his housemates. Watching him discover that he’s allowed to have fun is one of the most endearing things about him.

Inside, Oliver is potty trained and knows sit, down, wait, and come. He has spent time in a kennel without trouble, though he currently free roams when his foster is away. He doesn’t get on the couch and sleeps in different spots around the house, sometimes choosing the master bedroom. His one notable household hobby is counter surfing. Leave food on the counter or in the sink and Oliver may perform an inspection without waiting for permission. At 80 pounds, he is tall enough to believe “out of reach” is a challenge rather than a rule. Oliver also has a little separation anxiety. If his person is away for long stretches, especially several times in one day, he may howl. His foster has not seen destructive behavior afterward, but he would do best with people who are home a fair amount and can help him settle into a dependable routine. Because he may howl when left alone, apartment living likely would not be his best fit. His foster envisions a home with a securely fenced yard, a dog playmate, and a family that enjoys outings as much as they enjoy quiet time together.

Oliver’s ideal family will give him time to trust, room to keep growing into himself, and the care he needs while he finishes treatment. In return, they’ll get a gentle, well-mannered adventure companion who rides like a pro, knows when to take a nap, and offers a very polite reminder whenever the belly rubs end prematurely. There is already so much to love about Oliver—and the best part is that he’s only just beginning to show us who he is.

If you’re ready to give Oliver the patient, loving home he deserves, fill out an adoption application here so we can send it to his foster family:

https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app

Yes, the actual application. A comment saying “I want him” is lovely, but Oliver’s foster family cannot review your household based on three words and a profile picture of a sunset. And if approved, you’ll need to pick him up in person in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Oliver is excellent in the car, but he has not yet learned to drive himself to your house.
