Olive's Story
Age: Approximately 1 and a half years old.

Breed: Jack Russell Terrier

Sex: Spayed Female.

Vaccines: Up to date.

Flea/Tick preventative: Credelio Quattro, on the 1st of every month.

Meds: ½ tab of Trazodone twice a day (breakfast and dinner) to manage anxiety.

Olive is a one to one and a half year old Jack Russell terrier mix, rescued from the Laredo City Shelter in South Texas. Olive was one of over 40 dogs surrendered from a hoarding situation by the city of Laredo. We don’t know much about the circumstances of the hoarding case, but we do know that the majority of the over 40 dogs were euthanized due to behavioral or medical issues. The shelter quickly identified that Olive was very sweet but very shut down.

The day before Olive was due to be released to us from the city shelter she gave birth to 4 puppies and our rescue of one dog turned into a rescue of 5! Sadly, one of the puppies had a birth defect and didn’t survive more than a few weeks, but the other 3 puppies thrived – Olive was a great mom to them and they are now fully grown and in amazing homes.

Now it’s Olive’s turn to find a home of her own. Olive is a very sweet and affectionate dog. However, it can take Olive a while to become comfortable with people and feel safe, and we anticipate Olive may take weeks if not months to fully adjust to her new home. In the 6 months since she came into rescue Olive has gone from being a dog who would flinch at being touched, tucking her tail right up between her legs and shaking in fear, to being a dog who demands belly rubs after dinner and will happily snuggle up next to us on the couch to watch some TV. Olive has learned the sounds of a home and has adjusted well to a TV, dishwasher, AC/heating system, and the sounds of daily life (including a rather loud 6 year old boy playing games all summer). A washing machine on it’s final spin cycle can still scare her if it’s a load of sheets or towels (something heavy) and sudden noises scare her. Olive will instinctively run to hide somewhere small and dark when she is scared – she loves being under chairs or a couch. We have learned that letting her hide and feel safe and then come out again in her own time is the best approach to earning her trust.

We suspect Olive spent the entirely of her life before rescue inside. The outside world remains completely overwhelming to Olive. We think she can adjust to the outside just as she has to being part of a family home, but it will take more time. As of right now, Olive continues to be too overwhelmed by the outside to feel safe to potty outside. We have successfully trained her to use puppy pads inside and she never strays off them. A new owner should anticipate that Olive will need a space to use potty pads indoors while they work with her on feeling safe outside and should anticipate that she may never be the kind of dog to want to go for walks or who actively enjoys the outside world.

Olive is a very sweet, very gentle young dog who will make a great companion for the right home. She has some quirks as a result of having been rescued from an animal hoarding case, but she has made tremendous progress in her 6 months in rescue. Olive is spayed, up to date on vaccines, has had a dental cleaning and full bloodwork and everything is within normal ranges. She is negative for heartworm and tick fever and is on monthly preventatives for fleas, ticks and parasites. Olive takes a 1/2 tab of trazodone twice a day (total 1 tab per day) to help with her anxiety - she does very well on this medication and we would recommend adopters continuing with it. Her trazodone prescription costs less than $10 a month.
