Meet Olaf

Olaf is a beautiful Cocker Spaniel who was terribly neglected for the first part of his life. Olaf was the product of a puppy mill where they were going for special coloring. They bred what's called a Merle Cocker to another Merle to get the coloring that people are looking for nowadays. This practice is very bad and results in 25% or more of each litter being blind and or deaf. Thankfully Olaf does have some vision but is mostly deaf. We think he can hear high pitched sounds and he definitely feels vibration. Training a deaf dog is very possible and can be done with work and patience.
Olaf was purchased and then left in a crate for most of each day. He was never brushed or groomed in any way and was a solid mat. They didn't know he was deaf when they got him and thought he was just stupid. Once they realized he couldn't hear they did nothing to help him at all.
Olaf is now 18 months old and is a smaller Cocker at around 18 or 19 lbs.
Olaf has caught on quickly here with the help of the pack he's with. He gets along well with other dogs and loves to play with them. He uses the doggy door to go potty and learned that in a matter of hours by following the others.
We feel that because he's a bit of a clutz, older children would be better for him and we definitely think other dogs would benefit him as well.
When he arrived he was so happy to be out of the crate and was a little ball of energy. Now he's learned when the lights go out playtime is over for the day.
He has a funny bark and loves to look at his reflection wherever he finds it. He does have some vision issues but once he sees you he's good. He just needs to have a moment to focus.
Because of his special needsit is imperitive that he have a fully fenced yard that is at least 5' high all around.
Olaf has the chance at a wonderful life now and we will find him the perfect home. If you think you are able to give him that please email us for an application at ourbestfriendsrescue@gmail.com
