Oakley - Courtesy Post's Story

Courtesy Post - Introducing Oakley 6.5 year old Great Pyrenees/german shepherd in Abbotsford BC

Up to date on all vaccines and is neutered!

From Oakley's owner - This truly breaks my heart to make this post and I have tears in my eyes but are looking to find Oakley a new home where he can relax more and to give him the best place! I am willing to drive Oakley for the right home and I know it's out there! I have had Oakley since he was 10 weeks old. My husband and I had twins in December and Oakley has been struggling with adapting. He has always been good with my older nieces and nephews but they are older so looking for a home with no young kids. Now that the twins are 10 months they are crawling/walking and on the move. Oakley has always gone up to them on his terms but now that they are on the move, we are having to keep them seperated as Oakley is telling us he is not comfortable with them coming into his space. I have tried having Oakley around them in the muzzle but muzzle training is stressing him out. I have tried seperating them but he will jump over the gate to come into living room and has let out a few growls. When they cry he goes and hides downstairs.
We do live on a farm so Oakley does spend a lot of time out in his yard! He loves patroling his yard and barking off coyotes. He is very protective of his yard and house and will tell you if someone is there! He loves having people over and is always good once he meets them but will definitely bark on his side of the fence. He loves coming up on the couch beside you and getting pets. He will chomp his mouth together for more! It's very cute!
I would like to note that 5 years ago Oakley did nip a stranger that walked into our backyard unannounced. He did not break skin and it has not happened since and Oakley has done lots of training throughout his time with us.
Oakley loves going for walks. We would take him to the off leash dog trails. He does walk good on a leash but can have some leash reactivity due to frustration and wanting to say hi and will try to chase squirrels and bunnies. He going into the water on hot days as well at our local dog trail.
Oakley does have some anxiety. More fear based. He does takes anxiety medication. It's more around feeling scared if he has an ouchie such as an ear infection or feeling cornered. He usually needs meds to help get the drops in. We do a one time drop so it only needs to be once and he gets pre med before going to the vet. I can explain more about some of the anxiety if you are interested.
Oakley has no separation anxiety. We can leave him at home in the house or outside. He loves curling up under his tree and watching over his yard.
Oakley is a pretty lazy boy! He loves to lounge around and chill and loves being in his yard. Usually after a walk, he is done for the day. He does like to be around his people but does not have separation anxiety. He is a barker though due to having Pyrenees in him.
Oakley has never been around farm animals and he does not like cats!! We live on an egg farm so we don't have livestock. He gets along great with his border collie cousin but is protective of his yard and house so we don't just let any dogs come over. He does great with my friends 10 pound cavapoo and dogs at the trails but we don't take him to traditional dog parks due to feeling enclosed.
Oakley does have some resource guarding so we don't give him bones but we have been working on it lots. Oakley has been and done lots of training and we are always continuing to work on it! He does sometimes try to counter surf but it's been getting better! he is definitely a stubborn boy. Again, I have tried all measures to make it work and have him adapt but I feel he is struggling and I also have to protect both him and my twins. It breaks my heart to do this but if you would like more information on Oakley please message me! I am happy to provide any answers to questions you may have!
Oakley is a funny guy and although he does have his quirks I truly feel that his perfect home is out there!
