Norm's Story
- Adopt Norm: The Little Dog Learning How to Be a Dog! -

Norm is about 7 pounds of quiet resilience. He estimated to be about 3 years old and we believe he’s a poodle/terrier mix, but honestly when he first arrived it was hard to tell. He came from a hoarding situation of 175 dogs. He was severely matted, emaciated, neglected…

When Norm first got here, he cried and howled for an entire week. It was the sound of a soul that didn’t understand where he was or what was happening. He didn’t know how to eat from a bowl. He didn’t know toys could be fun. He didn’t know hands could be gentle. He was tiny, fragile and shut down.

But he has changed. Slowly, patiently, and with time, Norm is learning that the world can be safe.

He has gained a pound in two months, a huge victory for this little guy. He’s finally discovering toys. He’s learning that loud voices and sudden noises don’t mean danger. He’s very food motivated (hot dog slices and ham are the way to his heart), and he will gently eat from your hand once he trusts you.

The first nights, I had him sleep in my bed. He stayed as far away from me as possible, on the very edge, like he didn’t want to take up space. Over time he inched closer. First near my feet. Now he curls up against my legs or cuddles beside me.

Norm is fully potty trained. He will go to the door to be let out (though he won’t make noise, you have to notice him). If there’s a doggy door, he uses it confidently. He’s not destructive at all. When left alone he simply curls up in a fuzzy blanket and waits for you to come home.

He has mild patella issues in his back legs, likely from malnourishment and underdevelopment, but he doesn’t appear to be in pain. Because of his size and past, we are gently working on leash skills, but for now he is often carried when needed.

The most beautiful transformation happens when other dogs are around. Norm lights up. He follows their lead. He looks to them for comfort and confidence. He would absolutely thrive in a home with another kind, dog-friendly dog large or small who can show him the ropes.

He has made incredible progress with strangers. At first he would run and hide. Now he’s curious… sometimes even indifferent. He has been around children, but due to his tiny size and traumatic background, he would do best in a calm home with older, dog-savvy children who understand boundaries and patience.
Because of his trauma, Norm was initially very fearful of being cornered or grabbed and would bite if he felt threatened. He no longer bites, but he still needs gentle handling and a family who respects his need to feel safe. The key with Norm is patience, letting him come to you, moving slowly, building trust the right way.

He is currently on anti-anxiety medication, and it has helped him blossom. Every week he shows us a little more of who he really is.

It breaks my heart, in the best and hardest way, to see how tiny, how sweet, how incredibly gentle he is after everything he’s endured. Norm is proof that even the most neglected hearts can learn to love again.

He doesn’t need perfection.
He needs patience.
He needs softness.
He needs someone willing to move at his pace.

Norm deserves a home that will continue helping him understand that hands mean love, that bowls hold food, that toys are fun, and that he is safe forever.
If you have a calm home, a kind dog, and a heart big enough to give a little dog the time he needs to fully bloom… Norm might be your perfect match. ❤️

Interested in adopting?
