Nina's Story

Nina - 2 years & 17llbs, Chi Mix, Spayed

This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org

Their Foster Parent Says: "Nina has been a dream to take care of! Her favorite spot is cuddled right next to you on a couch, and she is curious about everything. She loves to follow us around and find out what we're up to! A typical day for us fostering her has started with a walk in the morning with her and her foster sibling. Things are a bit chilly now and she's a bit sensitive to the cold, so her coat is a must! She has been great on leash and is excited to explore her new neighborhood. She's pretty brave for a little dog new to the city! Nina has picked up potty training super quickly, with just a day of adjustment before going outside consistently. She can sometimes be a little shy if people come on too strong but is otherwise really friendly. When we take her to our favorite local dog-friendly cafe, she loves to say hi to everyone in line. After breakfast, we leave her alone. With her foster sibling, we were able to leave her for a couple hours without issues. She was a little anxious at first and cried, but she calmed down quickly. However, she struggles more on her own and will cry and pace for quite a while, so we're working on that! Once we're home, she's happiest if she can curl up with her head in your lap and is content to nap the day away (unless she has found a toy to steal!). We're working on some basic commands still, but she is pretty receptive to praise and firm “no”s for her behavior. We have also found that she is generally a very quiet dog – we haven't heard her do much more than whine. Nina has been very tolerant of her foster sibling, and they get along for the most part. They love to cuddle during downtime and they'll play when they're both up to it. He is a little too high energy for her though, and we think she would do best either with a dog that matches her energy a bit more or in a single-dog home. We think she would love to have the full attention of her humans. If you are looking for a low-key dog that thrives on your affection, Nina will be the perfect addition to your family!"

Level of dog ownership experience needed:
BEGINNER BUT PATIENT: This means we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale due to its breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup. This pup came from a hoarding situation so it's learning how to be a dog, needs someone who is patient and understanding.

Energy level
LOWER: Pretty chill indoors and won't demand endless amounts of stimulation and exercise but still needs a few walks a day (10-30 min each) for potty breaks and to stretch their legs

TOLERANCE TO CITY
City pup – Seems unfazed by the sights and sounds, may as well have been born here. She has been completely comfortable in Williamsburg; we haven't taken her to busier parts of Manhattan, but we think she would do fine based on how quickly she has adjusted to life here.

POTTY TRAINING
Yes – Few or no accidents. After a day of adjusting, she has learned to go outside very quickly.

COMFORT LEVEL W STRANGERS
Social butterfly – Wants to be friends with everyone who walks by, loves anyone who will stop to say hello. If a stranger comes on too strong, though, she may back away at first.

BEHAVIOR W KIDS
Would be okay in a home with repectful kids aged 6 and up

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR W DOGS
Yes – Good with most other dogs (sizes, breeds, etc.) as far as we know and hasn't been reactive. However, she just isn't that interested in other dogs. As for her foster sibling, she generally likes him and will cuddle and play, but she will absolutely stand up for herself and set boundaries.

RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR W ANIMALS
Would be okay in a home with a cat due to her breed and size

MOUTHY BEHAVIOR
Past this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in their mouth that aren't food. Doesn't try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime

SEPARATION ANXIETY
Working on this – takes some time to settle down when home alone

LEASH MANNERS
Old Pro – Doesn't pull hard or need much direction. She is very easy to walk and is happy to go where you are headed, with an occasional stop to sniff.

CUDDLE BUG LEVEL
Medium to high – Loves to snuggle when she's in the mood (which is often) but sometimes stays in her own bed.

JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HI
Listens to correction – Only jumps on people they know when really excited, stops with correction. Her jump is pretty calm and very easy to manage.

CRATE TRAINING
Not at all – We have a crate set up but she has shown limited to no interest in spending time in there after the first day.

Medical status
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from the South or Puerto Rico ; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake

How this dog ended up with Social Tees:
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
