Niko's Story

Meet Niko!

Sometimes all a dog needs is someone willing to believe in them.

Niko's journey began on the streets of Sabanera in Dorado, Puerto Rico, where he and his brother, Nero, wandered alone as tiny puppies. Concerned neighbors kept the brothers safe until one of our dedicated rescue partners came to their rescue.

When Niko was found, his skin was in heartbreaking condition. Fungal infections and severe skin disease covered much of his little body. With months of dedicated veterinary care, antibiotics, medicated baths, and plenty of love, Niko has completely transformed into the handsome boy he is today.

Now 2 and 1/2 years old and weighing 39 pounds, Niko is a sweet, gentle dog with a quiet nature. He can be timid in new situations, so he'll need a family that understands that trust isn't rushed—it grows with patience, kindness, and consistency.

Niko and his brother Nero look like twins - the only way to tell them apart easily is by looking at their feet... Niko has white paws.

Because Niko gains confidence by watching other dogs, he must go to a home with another friendly, confident dog who can show him that people are kind and life is meant to be enjoyed. Having that canine companion gives him the reassurance he needs to continue coming out of his shell.

Niko is house trained, crate trained, wonderful with other dogs, and does well with cats. He has all the ingredients to become an amazing companion; he simply needs someone willing to let him bloom in his own time. Because of his gentle, timid nature, Nero would be happiest in a home with children 12 years of age or older.

Watching a shy dog discover joy is one of life's greatest gifts. The first time Niko chooses to lean into you for affection or greets you with a wagging tail because he finally knows he's home, you'll understand that every moment of patience was worth it.

If you're looking for a loyal companion and have a confident dog who can help guide him, Niko is waiting to begin the next chapter of his life, with you.

If you're interested in adopting this precious little boy, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Adoption Info:
Apply at https://www.heartsandtails.org/adoption-application
Due to high inquiry volume, only applicants who appear to be a good match will be contacted.
