Niko's Story

Meet Niko

Also known as Niko Piko, Mr. Chonk and Mr. Gremmin. A little Chihuahua mix with several nicknames, a very reasonable approach to exercise and a firm belief that every car should come with a designated seat for him.

Niko is approximately 5 years old, weighs about 13 pounds and is a calm, affectionate little guy who enjoys being close to his people. He's been in foster care for about a month, and once he's settled in, he's a loyal companion who likes being part of whatever you're doing. Especially if what you're doing involves picking up the car keys.

Because if there's one thing Niko takes seriously, it's his role as Passenger Prince.

Going to the store? He's interested. Running errands? Count him in. Just going for a drive? Even better. Niko absolutely loves car rides and would be delighted to have someone who enjoys bringing their little copilot along.

When he's not supervising from the passenger seat, Niko enjoys leisurely neighbourhood walks, playing with his toys and taking some impressively long naps. He does have occasional bursts of playful energy, but let's be clear, this little guy is built for leisure, not sport. A pleasant stroll followed by a comfortable place to sleep is much more his speed.

Niko gets along well with other dogs. He's generally quite passive when meeting them, allowing the other dog to take the lead while he figures out the situation. He also lives with a kitten and is happy to coexist, even sleeping beside the kitten in bed. He may offer a bark if the kitten tries to recruit him for playtime, but otherwise isn't particularly concerned.

Because of Niko’s small size, a home with older, dog savvy children who understand how to interact gently and respectfully with little dogs would be the best fit for him.

Niko comes with some pretty good household manners. He's house trained, crate trained and walks very nicely on leash. He's responsive to cues such as "leave it" when something catches his attention during a walk.

He may voice a brief objection when first placed in his crate, but once he hears the door lock, he settles down within moments and curls up on his bed or blanket for a nap. He hasn't shown signs of separation anxiety.

And while we're on the subject of communication, Niko has a very efficient system. If he'd like to be picked up, needs to go outside or thinks it's time for food, he'll let you know with his own distinctive little bark. No guessing required.

Niko would be a great match for someone whose idea of a good day includes a leisurely walk, a few errands with a four legged copilot and plenty of time to relax at home. He's perfectly happy sharing his space with another friendly dog, but he's also quite content being the centre of attention, particularly in a home where someone is around most of the time.

A securely fenced yard is required. Niko can be a runner if he's loose, so he must always be in a securely enclosed area or wearing his harness and leash when outside.

And if you're hoping to win him over, his foster has shared one particularly useful piece of information: dehydrated salmon treats. Niko is a big fan.
Niko doesn't need an especially complicated schedule. A walk around the neighbourhood, a little playtime, a good nap and, ideally, a car ride somewhere in between.

The Passenger Prince is ready for his next assignment. Applications from households with reliable transportation and an appreciation for leisurely living are especially welcome.

At Myrtle Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, every dog adopted comes with:
* Spay/Neuter
* Core vaccines
* Rabies vaccine (age dependent)
* 4DX test for heartworm & tick borne diseases (age dependent)
* Flea, tick & heartworm prevention
* Parasite treatment
* Microchip
* Dental surgery if recommended by our veterinary partner
* A session with a positive reinforcement trainer
* 30 days of Trupanion Pet Insurance
* Ongoing support from our team because adoption is just the beginning

Adoption Fee: $850

To apply to adopt Niko:
https://form.jotform.com/243494963032258

#MyrtleAnimalRescue #MARSRescue #StThomasOntario #AdoptNiko #ChihuahuaMix #OntarioDogRescue #AdoptableDog
