Nero's Story

At only 6–8 months old, Nero has already survived more than most dogs ever should.

Nero was dumped in the tiny mountain community of Forest Falls, a place which has sadly become a dumping ground for unwanted young dogs. For six long days, he survived alone in our national forest: searching for food, safety, and someone he could trust.

But what made Nero different from the beginning was this: he wanted to believe in people.

He would gently take food from Good Samaritans hands, lingering nearby, wanting connection so badly. Even after escaping a trap twice and refusing every attempt to leash him, you could see in his eyes; he wanted to trust.

Then one day, Nero decided he was done running, stood still, and allowed a leash to be slipped over his head.

And from that moment on, Nero's real personality began to shine. Safe in rescue, Nero is finally getting to be what he always should have been: a happy puppy.

He is playful, goofy, incredibly loyal, and absolutely loves other dogs. He’s wonderful with people and does great with children. While he can be a little shy at first with new people, it’s clear he wants to engage and once he trusts you, he bonds deeply.

Nero is already around 50 pounds and still growing, so he’s going to be a big boy. Everyone who meets him guesses a different breed mix (Pitbull, Labrador Retriever, Cane Corso, Boxer, etc.), so we have done a DNA test to solve the mystery. It will take a couple weeks to get the results.

His name fits him perfectly. Nero comes from a Latin name meaning “strong,” “vigorous,” and “powerful” — and honestly, we can’t think of a better name for a dog who fought so hard to survive while still holding onto his gentle heart. Nero isn’t just resilient. He’s joyful. He’s loving. He’s learning the world can be safe.

And now he’s looking for the family that will make sure he never has to survive on his own again.

Nero is neutered, up to date on vaccinations and microchipped. His adoption donation is $200.
