Nero's Story

Meet Nero!

Some stories begin with heartbreak, but the best ones end with hope.

When Nero was just a tiny puppy, he and his brother, Niko, were found wandering the streets of Sabanera, a community in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Kind neighbors did what they could to keep the frightened little brothers safe until one of our amazing rescue partners was able to step in and give them the chance they deserved.

Life had not been kind to Nero. His skin was in terrible condition, covered with fungal infections and just about every skin issue imaginable. Thanks to months of antibiotics, medicated baths, and lots of loving care, Nero has made an incredible recovery. Today, his beautiful coat is a reminder of just how far he's come.

While his body has healed, Nero is still learning that the world can be a safe place. At 2 and 1/2 years old and 37 pounds, he's a gentle, sensitive soul who takes comfort in following the lead of other dogs. Because of this, Nero will need a home with another confident, friendly dog who can help him continue building trust and confidence. Having a canine role model makes all the difference for him.

Nero is both house trained and crate trained, gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and is also great with cats. He's not the dog who will immediately run into your arms, but if you're patient and willing to let him blossom at his own pace, you'll have the privilege of watching a shy heart slowly open. Because of his gentle, timid nature, Nero would be happiest in a home with children 12 years of age or older.

Nero and his brother Niko look like twins - the only way to tell them apart easily is by looking at their feet... Niko has white paws.

There's something incredibly special about earning the trust of a dog like Nero. Every tail wag, every gentle nuzzle, and every step toward confidence is a victory worth celebrating.

If you have a calm home, a confident canine companion, and a heart for helping a deserving dog continue his journey, Nero just might be the perfect addition to your family.

If you're interested in adopting this precious boy, please complete an adoption application on our website.

Adoption Info:
Apply at https://www.heartsandtails.org/adoption-application
Due to high inquiry volume, only applicants who appear to be a good match will be contacted.
