Nemo's Story

Nemo is a pit hound mix, male, about 8 months old. He is white with dark patches over both eyes and dark ears, and he still has the long legs and loose stride of a dog who has some filling out left to do.

He came in as an owner surrender along with his dad, Marlin. The two of them are easy together, but Nemo does not need his father in order to do well, and he can go home on his own.

He is very good with other dogs. That is not a guess, it is what we see with him, and it opens up a lot of homes that are closed to a lot of dogs.

With people he is friendly and he is also still building his confidence. He wants to come say hello, and he does better when the hello comes to him gently instead of all at once. In a home where he is allowed to take that at his own pace, the confidence keeps coming, and another steady dog in the house would do more for him than anything a person could teach him.

He already knows sit, and he is very motivated by treats, which makes him a pleasure to work with. Show him what earns the reward and he stays with you.

At a year old, with hound in the mix, he has real energy to spend. He will do best with people who plan to spend it with him, through walks, training, and something to keep his head busy. This is not a dog who wants to lie around all day.

He has not been around cats or children that we know of, so we cannot make promises in either direction, and slow supervised introductions would be the right way to find out.

We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
