Nelson's Story
Nelson is a very smart dog and wants to please, but many times seems a bit confused as to what he should be doing. He is full of curiosity and excitement but without the knowledge how to channel it yet. It is almost like he is a puppy inside a big dog's body. In a month he will be turning 3 years old. He is just a tad over 100 pounds, and we are working on reducing that weight with playtime, exercise and walks.

He had a bit of a difficult start, basking in all the puppy attention and then a baby came along just months after. He needed more structure, socialization and the attention that every young dog craves. His parents tried their hardest, but with two children under 2 and a young dog, there just was not enough time and energy to meet all the needs of children and a growing dog. Nelson was very anxious and his behaviors reflected his nervous state. It came to the point where Nelson had to come to rescue for the safety of the small child as well as a bit more peace in the home.

He is a sweet dog that takes correction very much to heart. He loves to be by his people. Nelson loves to play outside and is always on a leash unless he is in the dog pen area. He does go for walks on a longer length leash to allow exploring. Nelson does play ball and fetch for short periods of time. Playtime is very exciting for him.

He loves to go on car rides and will lay down quietly until it is time for his ride to end. Like any dog, he can get anxious if there is a lot of noise, fireworks or if there is something out of the ordinary outside, he will run to see what it is and may bark. We have been reassuring him everything is OK and he needs to settle down, which he does fairly quickly.

He did well at the groomer and is paw sensitive so nail trimming is difficult to win his trust. Nelson does tolerate brushing but it is not his favorite thing. He just had a shorter puppy cut a couple of weeks ago.

He is the kind of dog that will go to the end of the earth for you and what you want but is weary of new situations until he feels safe. He is crate trained, neutered, microchipped, UTD on all shots, received 3 year rabies, had Bordetella preventative for kennel cough, distemper combo shot, heartworm tested and has received a yearly preventative shot, on monthly flea and tick control. Nelson is completely house trained, no accidents in the house. There are no food aggressions, he is very treat motivated and he is gentle when getting a treat.

He’s a sensitive dog who responds beautifully to confident, gentle leadership. He truly wants to please and is eager to learn, but he’ll need patience, consistency, and someone who sees the wonderful dog he’s meant to be. On the leash, he can be quite a gentleman, staying by your side throughout the walk. He needs someone strong and assertive who can help teach him boundaries and build his confidence.

Nelson needs to be the only pet in the home, where he can have all the attention and structure he needs. He does get along with other dogs but would do best as an only dog. A securely fenced yard is a must and would give him lots of space to run and play.

He needs someone with dog experience, especially with breeds like Old English Sheepdogs. If you are willing to have lots of patience and love, Nelson will be your very best friend. He is full of potential, just waiting for the right person to help him be the great dog he was always meant to be.
