Nala's Story

Nala is currently living and training with her handlers at Fluvanna Women's Correctional Center.

Through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, Pixie's Pen Pals (a program of FETCH a Cure) places homeless dogs in the care of incarcerated people for dedicated, individualized training and socialization guided by canine behavior specialists.

The bio below was provided by her handlers at Fluvanna Women's Correctional Center:

Nala has been in our program since 2024. She is a big, sweet, loveable dog who will bond strongly with one person but, with proper introductions, will embrace numerous other people as well. She is loved dearly by many people at the institution where she is being trained.

Nala came in with a few issues: lack of trust, not liking to be touched, and space issues. She has overcome these issues, but it still takes her a while to trust new people. She is naturally a dog who will alert bark when seeing a stranger, someone outside her fold, and she reminds us somewhat of a livestock guarding breed type of personality.

She is fantastic with other dogs and has great play and social skills with them. Nala enjoys being outside chasing birds and watching for deer.

She is not the type of dog who wants to snuggle in bed with you, but she is devoted and will be your best friend. Nala still has some space issues, so it is best to met her on her terms. She is a clear communicator and will always tell you how she is feeling or what she wants.

Her skills include: sit, down, wait, back up, leave it, roll over, come spin, take it, get dressed (having harness put on), and is crate- and house-trained.
