Mya's Story

Meet Mya, a precious freckle faced 21-month-old English Setter who is looking for a patient, loving, and active home to call her own. Myas rescue journey started in a South Texas shelter where she was turned in because she wasnt a good hunting dog and we agree, hunting isnt for her. Her prey drive is low/medium and her activity level is high for a young field ES; she regularly does 45-60k steps on her Fi GPS collar daily. If you let her, Mya will run and play all day until its time to go to bed, only needing 15-30 minute rest breaks several times a day. A home where her people arent home during the day to let her in and out and in and out and in and out would be difficult for her because shes not ready for unsupervised free roam inside and she needs someone bringing her in from the outside to take rest breaks. Mya has absolutely blossomed since arriving at her foster home in S/Central Texas. It took this sensitive, sweet girl just three days to acclimate with the people, dogs and cats. She is still very much a puppy at heart and brings a joyful, bright energy to every single day.

Mya has a soft, submissive personality. She shows signs of a past where people may have been harsh with her, so she responds best to gentle guidance, positive reinforcement, and lots of love. Once she knows she is safe, her true puppy personality shines! She is active, happy, and loves to self-exercise in the large setter-interesting fenced yard at her foster home.

Mya is incredibly social with other dogs and is seeking a home with a playful, active canine companion. She is curious about the resident cats and likes to sniff and nose them so she will do best with inside only cats that dont run from her. While she is a quiet girl overall, Mya will alert-bark outside at noises or people passing by, though she has been very responsive to gentle correction from a citronella bark collar.

Mya's house-training is going well and she has not had any accidents with a routine of leashing in the house or being crated when unsupervised. She sleeps beautifully in her crate at night and stays there comfortably for up to 3 hours if her foster family is out. She does not have separation anxiety as long as other dogs are nearby and in the same room. Mya is treat-motivated and eager to please and learn.

Mya will thrive in an active household with a secure, Setter-interesting, fenced yard (minimum 5 feet) where doors and gates are always monitored and kept closed and there is another active companion dog. Because of her puppy personality, high energy, mouthiness, and love for collecting items and often chewing them up, she is not a candidate for a home with kids where there will be toys, clothing, etc. within her reach. She would be a good first field English Setter if you are patient and will give her time to outgrow her puppy chewing phase, have previous experience with high energy dogs and are ready to give this deserving, affectionate girl the spoiled life she deserves. Mya will be giving you kisses and lap snuggles within minutes of meeting you!

Mya is fully vetted, spayed, tested, on heartworm preventative and microchipped. She is currently on a diet to gain weight.
