Muumuu's Story

Although Muumuu is 10 years old, she doesn’t act her age. Her zoomies look like a low-slung racecar burning rubber. The only giveaway is her frosty muzzle.

See her deep barrel chest, her slim waist. At 40 pounds, Muumuu is agile and athletic. Yet she’s happy to sink into a dog bed to nap for hours or to lick a pupsicle in a sunny spot in the yard. She likes to look out windows, monitoring comings and goings. Even when she first goes to the yard, she checks the periphery. Yet she can also be calm and quiet for hours.

You will melt as she gazes at you with her soulful brown eyes. She exudes an earnestness and openness. And if you’re not sure what she’s thinking, see what her ultra mobile ears tell you. Their position conveys a message. Out to the sides: Where to next? Glued to the side of her head: Are you sure about that? Or maybe it’s: Aw, come on. One up, one down: Hmm, I’m on the fence.

She expects only good of humans. But there are two types she’s leery of. Golfers (especially in golf carts) and men in cars who stop and roll their windows down to talk to her human lead her to erupt into barks. Otherwise, she is generally quiet at home and on her walks. Even when other dogs bark at her, she acts oblivious, as if to say: “Dog? What dog?” Most of the time when walking, her head bobs up and down as her nose follows scent trails in the grass.

Muumuu is quiet at home, except for when someone new is at the door or when you’re getting ready to go for a walk. In the latter case, she gets amped up and dances around. She may bay in a houndly way. But we’re working on her learning it’s okay not to voice so much excitement about the impending walk.

Muumuu can get rambunctious. She is still learning not to jump up onto new acquaintances. Usually, she calms down within a minute. She seems to want to make friends with whoever comes into the house.

Muumuu would like nothing more than to follow scent paths when outside. Sometimes during a walk, you’ll think she’s doing great on a loose leash, and then her nose will be yanked in a new direction. And so will the leash. While perhaps 2/3 of the time, she’s good on leash. She can pull the other 1/3. But with continued training, the pulling is sure to diminish.

Muumuu’s nose never misses a visitor to the yard, whether a squirrel or a rabbit. She will pursue the squirrel unless the fence stops her. She once dug into a rabbit burrow but was taken aback when a tiny bunny kicked her in the nose.

An ideal home for Muumuu would look like this:
• It will come with a secure fenced-in yard. The fence should be at least 4 feet high. Muumuu needs a fenced-in yard that she can’t dig her way out of.
• A walkable neighborhood will make it possible for her to get two good walks a day, plus play or rest time in the dog yard.
• A sunny spot where she can lie in the sun.
• When she rolls over and exposes her belly, she will receive gentle belly rubs.
• While it would be easiest if Muumuu were the only dog in the household, she could potentially be part of a multi-dog household. A savvy dog owner would need to make careful introductions and supervise dog-dog interactions to ensure domestic tranquility.
• Because she can be boisterous, we recommend homes with children ages 12 and above. She could knock smaller children over.

Muumuu is crate-trained. In the past, she slept in her crate, but now she’s doing fine sleeping on either a dog bed or the foster’s bed.

She is housetrained. Plus, if she needs to go, she’ll let you know by standing by the door or coming and staring at you with big eyes. She knows sit, down, shake (or high five), and touch. When you feed her, she will sit off to the side, waiting for the bowl to touch the ground before approaching it. She also rides well in the car. No barking.

Muumuu has a lot of love to share. If you’re ready to make time and space for her in your life, she will bring so much joy into your world.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS FROM THE FOLLOWING AREAS: The state of Maryland, Washington, DC and the surrounding DC metropolitan area, Baltimore and the surrounding metropolitan area, the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia (Jefferson, Morgan and Berkeley Counties) and Northern Virginia. You will receive a confirmation that your application has been received within 24 hours. If you do not receive the confirmation, please contact hedgesvillehound@aol.com before resubmitting your application. Please note: Our Petfinder listings make it clear that some dogs are not ours, but are instead courtesy postings for other rescues. If we receive an email or application about another rescue's dog, we forward such emails on to the appropriate rescue, but cannot be responsible for their response time. If your application is not a good match for the dog, we will send you an email declining your application, along with reasons, within 48 hours of receipt of the application. All decisions are final. If your application is a possible match, we will contact your vet for a reference. Please make sure that you provide several years' worth of vet information, not merely your most recent vet. This is very important; if you do not provide your vets' phone numbers in a timely manner, we cannot process your application. IF YOU ARE A FIRST-TIME PET-OWNER, YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PROVIDE A VET REFERENCE but we will ask you, separate from the application, for 3 personal references. We will contact you with the results of your references. If the references are unsatisfactory, you will be alerted to this. If they are satisfactory, we will contact you to discuss the dog and to arrange a home visit. Once the home visit is completed, we will arrange for you to meet the dog. http://hedgesvillehounds.wixsite.com/adoption
