Mr. Buttons's Story
7/15/25 - Mr. Buttons learned to play fetch over the weekend

DOB: 3/29/2021
Weight: 18#

Mr. Buttons is vaccinated, dewormed, defleaed, neutered, microchipped with lifetime registration to the rescue, heartworm negative (5/20/25) and on monthly heartworm prevention.

Mr. Buttons was running the streets and a big cluster of apartments for a minimum of 6 months before he was trapped. All of the residents knew him and a few nice residents would leave food out for him. I observed many more residents yelling at him, throwing things, trying to hurt him, and have their dogs attack him etc. So, he was understandably not trusting of people.

He was extremely fearful and had some fear aggression. I didn't know if he would be adoptable or if euthanasia would be the only option. It's been over 1 year though and he's been doing great recently post neuter. He gets along with all of the other fosters and should be fine with most dogs with a proper introduction. He's crate trained and pretty well house trained now. It's a joy to see his confidence building and his personality come out.

He's been doing really well on his leash training and we are up to 3 walks a day currently. He potties on leash and would be good as an apt or condo dog. He might not be ready for loud busy social settings. But he's been doing great around my quiet neighborhood and doesn't startle as much with loud trucks like he used to. He's been non-reactive to people and large and small dogs when he pass them on out walks... even when they are barking and lunging at him from across the street. He's pretty quiet and not a huge barker. He likes car rides. He has recently discovered the joy of toys and snuggling on the sofa.

I have no clue what "breed" he is. But he's got black/tan markings like a minpin and similar body size with a big rounder head. So maybe a minpin/pug mix (yes, someone local was breeding and selling puppies) or maybe he's a puggle or who knows. He's 100% good boy though!

He only has one eye. So, I make sure that I don't just grab him etc especially on his "blind side". When he was trapped, he still had sutures from when the eye was removed. So, someone paid for an expensive enucleation and then abandoned him. My theory is that maybe he was attacked by a larger dog, his owner paid to vet him and remove his eye. He developed fear aggression from the attack... which is common... and the owner wasn't prepared for that and maybe abandoned him.

Due to his unknown past, he would be best suited to an adult only home. One that is familiar with rescue dogs and is nothing but patient and loving and uses positive reward based training. He will not respond well to anything negative. That just brings up the fear that we've worked so hard to work through.

If you are interested in adopting, please cut and paste the link below to fill out an adoption application:

https://form.jotform.com/92916416469165

After the application is processed and approved, a home visit and meet and greet with the dogs will be scheduled. If there are any fencing issues, make sure that repairs are done prior to the home visit. Typically, the adoption is finalized the day after the home visit and meet and greet. Out of area adopters would need to drive/fly in to meet the dogs and adopt.
