Name: Morty
Nicknames: Mort, Morta-moo, Mordor, Why-That-Face? and GoodBoy
Age or Date of Birth: Approximately a year old but likely closer to 1.5-2 years if my foster mom had to guess.
Activity Level: High energy but also loves to chill.
Things I do in my free time: Play with my foster canine sister, chase critters, dissect toys, chew on bones, play tug and chase balls, hike, go for car rides, eat, snuggle and "help" with landscaping.
Things I know: Not much! My foster mom says I’m a good boy with a great personality but that I don’t know any manners.
Things I am learning/currently working on: Everything. I don’t think I was ever taught any behaviors so I’m currently learning the basics.
Who I currently live with (humans and animals): Two adult humans and one adolescent dog.
How I do with kids: Great! I have only met one kid here in MN, but I didn’t jump on her. I took treats gently and I didn’t care when she rode her bike right next to me.
How I do with dogs: I LOVE DOGS. I play really well and am super tolerant of dogs, though sometimes I want my space. My foster sister doesn’t know how to give me a break, so we get separated when we get done playing or hiking. I don’t show any signs of resource guarding in my foster home, though I sometimes get annoyed when my foster sister tries to grab what I’m playing with. I don’t growl or hurt her- I just try to walk away from her.
How I do with cats: Reportedly, good. I have not met a cat in MN, but my foster mom was told I am good with cats. There are about 4-5 feral cats in the neighborhood, so I get to see them sometimes, but we don’t hang out with the cats.
My current size: 63 lbs. My foster mom says I am the perfect weight!
How I do in my kennel: Great! I sometimes hesitate to go in but that’s only if I want to snuggle or play. Treats usually convince me. I will sleep, eat, rest and travel in my crate.
How I do in car rides: I love sticking my nose out the window to sniff all the smells. If I’m tired, I will nap but otherwise I like to look out the window.
Am I house trained?: Yes, though I had two accidents when I first got here because I was adjusting to my foster home. I don’t indicate that I have to go outside, and I don’t mark- not even on walks/hikes.
Additional Info from foster: Morty is SUCH a good boy. He is social, doesn’t have separation anxiety (though he does sometimes whine if he wants to hang out with us when he is in his confinement area), walks well on a leash and is a goofy, sweet boy. He snuggles really well in bed at night and has lots of kisses to give. Morty will require some patience and continued training, as do all dogs. He very obviously hasn’t learned any manners but that’s a good problem to have because of how well-adjusted he is to the world. He sometimes hesitates/gets nervous in new situations but warms up quickly as long as he gets treats and love. He rarely vocalizes unless he really needs to go potty or needs to burn some energy.
Morty has a high prey drive so teaching him to ignore critters will likely be the most difficult task to accomplish. He successfully caught a mouse on a hike in less than 5 seconds. I think Morty would be amazing in barn hunt or lure coursing sports. He also enjoys sniffaris and goes at his own pace, which is often slower than a tortoise. That’s okay, though, because walks/hikes are for him to enjoy.
The ideal home for Morty will be someone who can commit to kind and gentle handling/training. Morty does really well with positive reinforcement and sometimes gets hand shy if we move our hands too quickly. He won’t thrive in a home where physical or verbal corrections are prominent. So far, he has responded really well to the removal of the thing that he wants if he does something undesirable. For example, he jumps up a lot, so we are removing ourselves if he jumps on us. It takes a few tries, but he always figures out that jumping is not effective or efficient.
Morty is a special guy. If the timing were right, this bio would’ve never been written. He is truly amazing and is going to make the right person so very happy. It is impossible not to smile and laugh when we are with him. His “problems” are all minor and easily fixable, especially with love, support, appropriate expectations, management, and training.
