Monte's Story
Monte – A Gentle Giant in the Making

Quick Facts:
Age: 12 Weeks
Gender: Male
Breed: Great Pyrenees Mix
Estimated Adult Weight: 85–90 lbs
Vaccinations: Up to date (age-appropriate)
Spayed/Neutered: Will be neutered when age-appropriate
Heartworm: Negative (age-appropriate)
Microchipped: Yes
House Trained: In progress
Crate Trained: In progress
Leash Trained: In progress
Good With: Dogs, dog-savvy cats, children (with appropriate boundaries)

Special Notes:
Deaf
Blue eyes

Monte’s Story:
Monte is a 12-week-old Great Pyrenees mix who is already showing what a special dog he is going to be. Deaf from birth, Monte experiences the world a little differently — and because of that, he is looking for a family that understands that his needs matter just as much as theirs.

Monte is incredibly people-oriented and happiest when he is near his humans. He simply wants to be included and to belong. He does very well with other dogs and enjoys their company, and he can live with cats as long as they are dog-savvy and confident enough to set boundaries when his puppy energy kicks in.

He is good with children, but because Monte will grow into a very large dog, his future family should have experience with large breeds, deaf dogs, or be committed to learning and consistently reinforcing training and boundaries as he grows. Deaf dogs rely on visual cues, body language, and consistency — and Monte is eager, bright, and ready to learn.

Monte is not an apartment dog. His size, breed mix, and need for space mean he will thrive best in a home that can offer room to move, a predictable routine, and people who are prepared for a big dog with an even bigger heart.

If You’re Thinking About Adopting Me, I Think You Should Know:
I am deaf, and that means my family will need to learn how to communicate with me using visual cues and positive reinforcement. I am a growing Great Pyrenees mix who will become a large, strong adult, so structure and guidance are important for me. I love other dogs, can live with the right cats, and enjoy kids who understand boundaries. More than anything, I just want to be with my people and feel safe, included, and loved.

Important Adoption Information and Next Steps:

All animals adopted through the Oswego County SPCA (OCAWL) are:
Spayed or neutered
Up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations
Microchipped prior to adoption
Cats are FeLV/FIV tested, and dogs are heartworm tested (if age-appropriate).
Our animals are cared for in loving foster homes — they are not housed in a shelter environment.
We review all applications thoroughly to ensure the best match for both animal and adopter.
Our adoption fees help cover the cost of veterinary care, food, and rescue operations so we can continue saving animals throughout Oswego County.

To apply to adopt, please visit www.oswegocountyspca.org
and complete our adoption application.

After Submitting Your Application:
Please make sure you have notified your veterinarian that we will be calling and that it is okay to speak with us. If you do not currently have a vet, please determine which one you will be using and set up care in advance so we can confirm your new pet will receive medical attention when needed.

For Pets Already in the Home:
Because the number of homeless animals in our area is so large, we adopt only to homes where current pets are spayed or neutered, with documented medical exceptions. We also require that all resident pets be up to date on their vaccinations to help ensure that everyone — both new and existing family members — stays healthy and safe.

Keep in Mind:
We are 100 percent foster-based and 100 percent volunteer-operated, from the top down. Our team works hard to get animals into their forever homes as quickly as possible. Please be patient with us — but if you do not hear back within a few days, feel free to message us on our Facebook page to confirm your application went through.
