Moki: 5 yr male Lhasa Apso mix's Story
IMPORTANT NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT USE THE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FEATURE THAT PETFINDER SUGGESTS. AN ADOPTION APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED

Introducing sweet Moki! DOB Feb 2020, Moki is a neutered male Lhasa Apso (mix) weighing 8.5kg -working on reducing weight as he arrived into our care overweight.
Moki was surrendered to our rescue when his senior mom was coping with health issues and no longer able to provide him with the care that he needs and deserves.
He started exhibiting accidents in the home (resolved in rescue) due to lack of consistent walks or potty breaks.

More photos/videos of Moki may also be viewed in his album here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.721147410535888&type=3

Housetrained? Yes
He requires regular potty breaks every few hours to continue with his successful housetraining habits. He is doing fabulously now in his foster home who is there to make sure he gets the frequent outside breaks and walks that he needs. and the time and attention that he craves.

Moki is a relaxed, easy going boy who thrives with consistent routine. He loves going on walks and adventures, and spending time with you. He loves being near or touching you. He's so loving and is such a sweetheart. He loves belly rubs and to giving you kisses. Moki also really enjoys playing with plush toys, he likes to shake them and throw them around as he runs around the house. He also likes when I play tug with him (lightly) with his toys. He likes to follow you around the house and be involved in your day but has a relatively low-energy temperament.

NOTE: * Due to his life expectancy, he is not a suitable match for older seniors (65+). Our goal for every dog is to be able to live a full active life in their forever home without ever having to be rehomed or having their needs neglected again. Poor Moki has already had to be surrendered to our care due to his senior owner unable to continue properly caring for him.

Moki does show some signs of anxiety when I leave for longer then 2-3 hours. He's more sensitive to noises outside when I'm gone so he can bark more often because he's more anxious. He is therefore not suitable for attached homes/apartments, and does need someone who is home often, either working from home or with alternating schedules with partners to ensure he isn’t alone for long hours.

Crate trained? No not required. Moki is totally fine being left alone free in the house. He is not destructive and does not have accidents now that he has regular outings

At every feeding we practice sit and stay and his release word is "break". During walks we work on his training, incl practicing recall, feeling more confident in busier areas and rebuilding his muscle tone after his previous sedentary life

Moki is food motivated but he can be selective occasionally
He loves and is thriving on his balanced raw bold by nature patties, dehydrated or freeze dried meat treats & the occasional fruit or veggie treat.
DOGS: YES but not mandatory. Moki is very friendly with the dogs in his foster home as well as with other dogs we meet on walks. He would do very well either as an only dog with his family home often, or in a home with other dogs who are calm and respectful, he is not accustomed to playing with other dogs and is nervous in loud chaotic environments. He prefers his toys or humans to interact with.
Moki is great on a leash, he does like to walk in front and occasionally pulls a little bit, which we are working on, but he listens well and often walks near you.
He does really enjoy smelling trees and my philosophy is always that it's their walk and they get to do what they enjoy on their walks. We do not force dogs to walk tightly at our sides at all times, the mental stimulation of sniffy adventures and new environments is so beneficial for their wellbeing.

CATS: Yes Moki is very respectful of the cats in his foster home, understanding their cues and leaves them alone most of the time, never chases.

CHILDREN: No young children. Moki is stressed by loud noises and thrives best in a calmer home without the noise and chaos that is a typical environment in a home with children. He may be fine in a home with children over 12 who are dog savvy, respectful and calm.

Meeting new people: Moki will bark out of excitement at first when someone new enters the home, but once he smells the new person he stops barking. He's very friendly with new people though, he loves getting attention once he feels comfortable. Moki does take a little bit longer to trust men-he will occasionally growl at new men that he meets out of nervousness, not aggression, but with men who are respecting his boundaries, sharing treats and offering patience he does really well.
Moki would not be comfortable in a home with only a man as his primary caregiver.

Grooming: Moki is great for handling and grooming. His new family needs to be aware of and understand that he needs to be brushed regularly as his hair will tangle and matte if you don't regularly brush him. Brushing him daily is also a great way to bond. Like all dogs, it’s also important to ensure that his nails are trimmed every 4-5 weeks.

Things needing improvement : He needs improvement on the "drop it" and "leave it" commands and settling/feeling less anxious when left alone for more than 2-3 hrs.

Medical : Moki has seasonal allergies. After a food elimination trial and holistic remedy trials, we’ve learned that his seasonal environmental allergies-he gets extremely itchy -are best managed with Cytopoint injections (every 4-6 weeks) during prime allergy season. Cost is $115 for these injections (based on our vet fees)

Moki arrived into our care very overweight, but he's doing so well and has improved so much with his grain free raw diet, portion control and consistent exercise. His new family must be dedicated to continuing with his weight loss journey to achieve his ideal weight and muscle tone.

Moki does great in the car, no motion sickness or travel anxiety seen.

Moki would do best in a home where someone is home often, not just for lunch breaks. He really does best when he's around his humans and someone is around to let him outside to potty at regular intervals throughout the day.
Overall Moki is such a kind-hearted dog and has so much love to give and will thrive in his ideal home.

Please be aware:
Inground pools MUST be fenced and not accessible to dogs when outdoors
We do not adopt to homes with doggy doors to ensure the safety of all dogs

Adoption fee $750 (reduced due to cytopoint injections needed) + HST includes microchip, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, has had bloodwork completed, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us.
For anyone possibly interested in adopting from Hobo Haven, here are a few, but not all, criteria to be aware of:

An adoption application https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application must be completed and approved, screening will include quality of care check through your vet clinic, home inspection/interview via zoom, prior to meeting available dogs.
All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.

We require all serious applicants to watched "Petfooled" which is a free documentary at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XC1rUWWnxI
, or on Amazon prime
Our motto is "know better/do better" and we ask all adoptive families to be as committed to providing our dogs with quality nutrition as they are to providing love. This is especially important for dogs like Moki who require a grain-free, meat based diet without added carbohydrates, to keep his histamine levels and seasonal allergy inflammation supported.

We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions.
Our dogs are in private foster family homes, not in a shelter.

Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario.
For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON
If you are not willing to drive to this location to meet our dogs after you are approved, please do not apply.
We do not meet elsewhere nor deliver dogs. Adoptions within Ontario only

NOTE: Please note that due to the high volume of applications we receive, only those applicants whom are a good match for this dog's needs will be selected to move forward in the process. We take great care to assess our dog's needs and do not make exceptions, their needs are always our highest priority.
