Milou's Story
Maltese/Shih Tzu mix - Male - 17 lbs - 5 years (approx.)

Every so often a special dog comes along who needs a special adopter. That is Milou. Milou is admittedly not a dog for everyone. He needs an adopter who is patient and compassionate to help him reach his full potential. More about that later. Take a moment right now to watch a video of Milou and then come back and learn more about this special little man. You can watch the video by going to: https://youtu.be/HO1tk9VT8P8?si=_32duFd3Zhtbk9j_

As you saw, Milou is a bit if a character. He is adventurous and curious. He is always ready to explore his surroundings with infectious enthusiasm and with a friendly and lively personality. He is playful and spirited.

This beautiful boy loves being outside and going for lots of walks. Milou will do best in a home with a fenced yard.

Milou loves everyone he meets. He can be reactive to some dogs and wildlife, but is easily corrected with calm voice commands.

He is house trained and not destructive. He plays with toys and chase balls. He loves kids.

Milou doesn’t bark a lot…but will join in if the others start. He loves car rides.

Despite his small size, Milou can get a bit rough when he plays. If there is another dog in his new home, he would do best with another calm, gentle dog his size (approx. 17lbs) or larger. Milou has not been cat tested but is cat curious when he sees one.

So, why you ask does Milou need someone special to adopt him?

When Milou first came into our rescue he needed extensive dental surgery as his mouth was extremely diseased and painful. The advanced disease caused some bone loss to his jaw bone. We think that the pain he had made him very hesitant and sensitive to touch around his head. Personal care, such as grooming, is hard for him, but this has improved as he has learned to trust.

Milou has seasonal allergies that surface in warmer months. He gets injections to help with this, but flare ups cause even more sensitivity around his eyes and ears, which unfortunately adds to his resistance to having his head and face touched.

That said, Milou has come a long way in the past several months in his foster home, but he continues to be reactive to some touch.

Milou's family will need to work with him to understand his triggers and boundaries. He likes to be petted and played, but on his terms. Small things, like getting his harness on, are issues for Milou. As is often the case with dogs who experienced trauma, he does best when he has a routine and consistency.

Milou might take a long time to be fully comfortable with human touch. He will need patience, kindness and time, but the reward of seeing a happy, adjusted dog will be worth the effort. The fact he has come so far while in foster care gives me hope that with time and love, Milou will achieve his full potential.

For more information on Milou, please contact Julie (foster parent) at julz08@rogers.com

To fill out an adoption application for Milou, please visit our website: https://savemedogrescue.ca/application-to-adopt/

**Adoptions within the province of Ontario only
